So Bush throws down the Gauntlet, Knowing the Supreme Court is stacked in his favor
Edited on Mon Jul-09-07 10:45 AM by berni_mccoy
The next step is for the Dems in Congress to either:

1. Back down (most likely).
2. Push the issue to the Supreme Court (knowing S.C. will likely rule in favor of Bush).
3. Impeach since Bush is invoking Exec. Priv. to cover up a crime.

Unfortunately, Bush has done much worse than invoke Exec. Priv. improperly to warrant Impeachment, but someone took that option off the table. Now the case for impeachment is weak because the articles will be restricted to the most current issues (Improper use of Exec. Priv to cover a crime, Libby clemency used as obstruction) since the older, more powerful reasons for impeachment have been given a pass by the current Congress.

I am glad Cindy Sheehan is challenging Pelosi on this issue. Congress made a bad move when they took Impeachment off the table, and we are about to see the full effects of that bad decision.

1. So It's Not Possible To Put It BACK On The Table?
Shouldn't this, and Libby, kind of make it a possibility that there's going to be too much of a groundswell for even the linguine-spined Democrats to ignore?

6. It's hard to put the real issues back on the table:
1. Lied us into War
2. Broken treaties (Geneva convention)
3. Violation of the Constitution (Gitmo, rendition)
4. Violation of FISA, a felony
and MOST IMPORTANTLY:
TREASON for purposely exposing an undercover CIA operative for political gain.

10. After Pelosi's promise that it was off the table, to bring it back would
give the republicans a shitload of ammo to hammer her with going back on her word, playing politics, making it a partisan issure, whaterver - and make HER the issue instead of the impeachment. It's her "no new taxes" pledge.

Taking it off the table was probably the most politically inept thing she has ever done. Bringing it back will make the impeachment issue the issue, rather than make the impeachment the issue.

That said, she needs to get her shit together on how to respond to the very predictable attacks and bring impeachment back.

3. Seems to me, that Roberts involvement with Iran-Contra and his previous
dealings with Fred Fielding as regards advising him during that other Republican scandal should make him ineligible to deliberate in this case should it come before the Supremes. He should recuse himself or explain why he shouldn't. Don't worry, not holding my breath on that one.

4. He has EVERY court stacked, not just SCOTUS
Even so, he's probably planning to just drag it out while proclaiming "political theatre!" every third sentence. I saw an AP headline on Friday that Bush "Bashes Democrats" over failure of the Immigration Bill. :eyes: Typical.

7. This is one of the reasons why impeachment is the best course for Congress
I don't know what it's going to take, but doing the right thing at this point for Congress means putting impeachment on the table as the main course.

It's really about the only good option they have left available to them, without having to depend on another corrupt branch of government to do their job properly/honestly/fairly.

And they will have the Republican votes by the time it gets down to voting. The Republicans will HAVE TO jump on the impeachment train if they hold out any hope of getting re-elected in 2008. To stand by an unpopular President, who started an unpopular war, and who is hiding things from Congress will not work, and they know it.

For God's sake, the man is at 26%. 3 out of 4 Americans do not approve of him. Who the hell is going to stand with him with those numbers?

11. Impeachment is still the right thing to do.
At one point, Nixon thought he was going to make it through as well. Then the GOP turned on him. He was very popular at one point. It can happen again.

20. I say, call the Supreme Court's bluff. They don't want to vote to kill the Constitution.
They don't want to have to find the rationale to vote for a dictatorship.

I say, make the Supreme Court make it official, then attack them and the entire right wing agenda to stack the courts. Bring it out into the light, and let the voters see how they like it. Let the voters see for themselves how the blogosphere was right from the start about Bushco turning our country into a dictatorship.

22. yes, let's make the dictatorship official
That's what a pro-Bush decision will mean. Frankly, I think that might wake a few people up. But it is already too late, if that happens.
