Question: Who would be Speaker of the House if Pelosi lost to Sheehan?
Honestly, I'm curious. If Sheehan won in 2008, who would replace Pelosi as speaker, assuming the Democrats keep the majority? (or who is next in line as Majority Leader?)

1. Probably Hoyer
but Sheehan will never replace Pelosi, so it's a moot point.

21. just common sense
Pelosi was elected in 2006 with >80% of the vote. And that was before she became Speaker.

She's not going to lose an election to Sheehan.

12. Of course not, it's not based anywhere in reality
Sheehan doesn't have the money or machinery to run a campaign.

After she got trounced, all her gains in the last few years would be lost.

9. Interestingly
there's no requirement that the Speaker of the House be a member of the House.

So I vote for Whitney Houston.

15. Pigs Would Fly First
If Pelosi were to lose to Sheehan, be assured the Democrats would have also lost control of the House...thus this question is a moot one.

The leadership is determined each session of Congress...every two years, but the party caucus. Leadership is re-elected every two years...thus Pelosi could be voted out in '09...but highly unlikely.

18. "Democrats would have also lost control of the House" - Explain, please.
There's a comfortable Dem lead in the House. When Cindy wins, she would caucus with the Dems as Bernie Sanders did in the House and does in the Senate.

20. Here's one explanation
Not to put words in another poster's mouth, but if Sheehan can defeat Pelosi, then presumably third party challenges to a lot of other Democrats might also be mounted. And while in the hypothetical, Sheehan defeats Pelosi, in a lot of other places the result might be a split between the Democratic candidate and the Sheehan-esque third party candidate, handing the seat to the repub. If that happens enough times --- the Democrats lose control of the House.

Do I think this will happen? No. But i also don't think Sheehan has a snowball's chance in hell of defeating Pelosi.

28. a lot of "if's", onenote. I'm listening to Randi and there's a lot of support
for Cindy. It really comes down to what the Bay Area voters do. I'm not one, but if I were, I would not cast a vote for Pelosi. At best, I'd leave it blank.

22. Here's Your Scenario
Edited on Mon Jul-09-07 04:52 PM by KharmaTrain
The post asks about Pelosi losing her seat...it didn't mention how. I could "bet the ranch" Sheehan won't beat Nancy...I'd bet even money that Sheehan wouldn't draw 20% in that district. Thus the only way Ms. Pelosi stops being Speaker is if she loses the majority in the House or she loses her own seat in San Francisco to a very well-financed Repugnican...one who can afford millions in TV ad time.

If Cindy is serious about making a difference politically...get her voice and vote on that level, there are plenty of Repugnican seats in Northern California that could use a solid challenge...and that she stands a far greater chance of getting widespread support and winning that embarassing herself and Democrats in a fight against Pelosi.

The last incumbent House Speaker to lose an election was Tom Foley in 1994...losing both his seat and the House. Is this what Sheehan's supporters are hoping happen again?

On edit: has to clarify Repugnican challenger

32. But, her point, of course, is to pressure Pelosi. Here's my opinion.
Nationally, voters are turning to the Democrats. If nationally, there is interest in impeachment and Pelosi doesn't support it, then not doing so affects Pelosi and not the Democrats nationally. Voters would see Pelosi as the problem, not all Dem candidates running. With the House expecting to pick up more seats, if Pelosi's seat was lost to Cindy or to a Republicon, nationally there would be no change. The change would only be to Madam Speaker and her district for not getting Pelosi on the impeachment table.

I'm so for impeachment that I'd rather see Pelosi's seat lost (and her removal as Speaker) in any way that I could get it if she doesn't change her mind. It's up to her district to convince her that impeachment is on the table, since one DU poster has said she's not taking any calls from anyone outside her district -- even for matters dealing with the Speakship, which should be open to anyone.

35. She Can't Control The Senate
Again...look at the first 100 hours...many great things were passed by Pelosi & the House...raising the minimum wage, making major changes to prescription drug prices, assistance to military families and many other bills that are now held up in a Senate where 60 votes are needed to bring many of these items to the floor for discussion and a vote and then 67 are needed for a certain booooosh veto. We are in a situation of deliberate gridlock...not created by Pelosi, but by 10 Senate Repugnicans who stand in the way of forcing this regime to stop stonewalling and are responsible for the ongoing deaths in Iraq, the destruction of our economy and the politicization of our entire government. Taking out frustrations on Pelosi is shooting at your rear...and enables the very criminals we all are trying to bring down.

The impeachment argument makes no sense. Since boooshie and cheney are gone in '09, the only impeachment that can happen is a retroactive one...which, I strongly will advocate be done...to put that mark in the history book both these crooks deserve. With Democratic majorities and a Democratic President, this resitution could happen...but not if Democrats let internal divisions take focus away from the real enemy.

23. Who Would Be President If Aliens Came Down And Annihilated Us All With Toxic Booger Guns?
Would it be the green one? The purple one? The grey one? A different one we don't know of? Which of the aliens that took over our world after annihilating us with toxic boogers would end up being President?

I'm just curious. Honestly.
