David Corn finds a Senate phone number in the Palfrey list and it's not Vitters
Edited on Wed Jul-11-07 01:43 PM by Oreo
David Corn is reporting that he has found a call from 12/98 to a number with a Senate prefix. This was before Vitter won his Senate seat.

http://www.davidcorn.com/archives/2007/07/looking_for_joh.php
The most intriguing number I came across was this:

202-224-9655

There was a brief call between someone at this number and Palfrey the day after Christmas in 1998. What's interesting is that 224 is the prefix for Senate phone numbers. The obvious question, then, is, who in a Senate office was talking to the DC Madam? Could it have been a senator? Senator David Vitter, a Louisiana Republican who has acknowledged calling her service, was not elected to the Senate until 2004. Or was it a Senate aide looking to take advantage of her services? Or was it a Senate employee working for the escort service? Or did someone dial a wrong number?

On-line searches of the number have yielded no clues. And I have yet to discover a searchable Senate phone directory from 1998. Thus, this clue remains just a clue.

I've searched in Wayback and a few other places but I'm not coming up with anything.
That said... there is another person from the Senate that used Palfrey's services. It may not necessarily be a Senator but the truth will come out I'm sure. Happy Hunting!

1. A brief call
Maybe a wrong number.

You'd really have to comapare the caller's records, too.

That said, I am sure that there are plenty of smoking guns and bimbos -- in fact, an entire cigar bar's worth of smoke.

2. U.S. Senate Sergeant at Arms
Found the following from this link -- http://www.lib.ncsu.edu/congbibs/senate/105pbc.html:

******** Publications for Sergeant at Arms of the Senate
105-14 United States Senate Telephone Directory (May 1997)
105-15 United States Capitol: A Self-Guided Tour
105-18 Office of the Senate Sergeant at Arms
105-36 United States Capitol: A Self-Guided Tour
105-37 United States Senate Telephone Directory (March 1998)
(at Y1.3:S.Pub. 105-37)
105-51 Legislative Buzzers and Signal Lights

Looks like all it would take is a walk down to the office of the Sergeant at Arms of the Senate. Let's see how quick they can classify this unclassified publication.

3. I just called the number.
It rings, and rings, and rings, and rings!!

The line is still alive--no one answers, though.

There's one place where it might be, that no one has thought about, perhaps--are those banks of phones in the D and R cloakrooms still there? Anyone could call from there--principal or staff, and who'd know who it was?

That would be hilarious.

17. I said he had a very similar number in TN...
Sometimes people with multiple phone accounts try to get similar numbers.

19. That would be funny as hell if that turned out to be true.
Everyone I know from Utah suspects he's closeted! Did this Madam trade in male escorts, too?

9. It's almost certainly a Republican.
If it were a Democrat, it would've been leaked and milked for all it's worth by now.

13. The Reason It May Be Endlessly Ringing Is Cause It May Be A Fax Machine No Longer Hooked Up.
All the higher numbers for that prefix are fax machines, so this may have been one as well. Not sure if that would make any sense though.

But I can't WAIT to find out who this one is!
