5. This is important
Gupta Blatantly LIED! He is a fucking Doctor, one hopes he has his facts straight when he talks. Or he is bought off....

<snip>

During the July 9 edition of CNN's The Situation Room, Gupta presented a segment billed as a "fact check" of Moore's film, describing how Moore "fudged the facts." During the segment, he played two clips of Keckley, identified in the caption as a "Deloitte Healthcare Expert." During the first clip, following Gupta's statement that " survey of six industrialized nations found that only Canada was worse than the United States when it came to waiting for a doctor's appointment for a medical problem," Keckley asserted: "That's the reality of those systems. There are quotas. There are planned wait times. The concept that care is free in France, in Canada and Cuba, and it's not." Keckley continued: "Those citizens pay for health services out of taxes. And as a proportion of their household income, it's a significant number." During the second clip, which followed Gupta's statement that while citizens of countries with universal health care are subject to higher taxes than in the United States, "even higher taxes don't give all the coverage everyone wants," Keckley said: "Fifteen to 20 percent of the population will purchase services outside the system of care run by the government."

Gupta and Moore then appeared on the July 10 edition of Larry King Live to discuss Gupta's "fact check." After appearing on Larry King Live, Moore put several links on his website to back up his assertions to Gupta.

Contrary to Gupta's assertion on Larry King Live that Keckley's "only affiliation is with Vanderbilt University," Keckley is affiliated with Deloitte & Touche USA LLP, part of a global audit, tax, consulting, and financial advisory services group of firms. Keckley is the executive director of the Deloitte Center for Health Solutions. The Deloitte Center for Health Solutions states on its website that "it delivers research on and develops solutions to some of our nation's most pressing health care and public health related challenges." As Moore noted on Larry King Live, the Deloitte Center for Health Solutions is also "connected" to Tommy Thompson. The center's website lists Thompson as the Deloitte Center for Health Solutions' independent chairman.

Keckley is also a Republican contributor, as Moore claimed. According OpenSecrets.org, Keckley has donated $8,500 to Republican candidates or party committees since 1990, including $1,000 to Sen. Bob Corker (TN), $2,000 to the Republican Party of Tennessee, $2,000 to Sen. Lamar Alexander (TN), and $500 to Rep. Marsha Blackburn (TN). During that period, he has made no donations to Democratic candidates or party committees that have been reported to the Federal Election Commission.

Moore's assertion that Keckley "has done business with Blue Cross, with Aventis, with these other groups," is also accurate. According to Keckley's curriculum vitae, posted on Vanderbilt's website, from 1998 to 2002 Keckley served as chief executive officer of EBM Solutions Inc., which licensed software applications to "32 healthcare organizations in 2002 including Health Net of California, Blue Cross of Tennessee, Aventis and others." Keckley's curriculum vitae also lists him as a member of the Aventis Health Outcomes Measurement Committee. Further, Keckley's biography on the website of the Vanderbilt Center for Evidence-Based Medicine notes that he is "a frequent keynote speaker for national healthcare organizations including the AMA House of Delegates, National Quality Forum, The Medical Group Management Association, Disease Management Association, Blue Cross Association, American Association of Health Plans and others."

I find this particularly interesting especially since Corker was our former Mayor of Chattanooga.

to all areas. The Weinstein brothers who backed F911 and this project are rolling this out in a judicious way, so when it finally reaches those communities that may not have given it the time of day, enough dialog and discussion will have taken place, that they will actually go see it

36. no kidding.
i saw it last weakened. Considering that I am in the redneck part of Cook County, Illinois, (bush got 78% of the local votes in '04 - I was an election judge) the crowd was, well, surprising. very few seats, given the time of the showing. People were in tears several times, and screaming at others. Let's just say that Bush does not fare well these days over here.

People cheered at the end. THAT NEVER HAPPENS IN THIS CONSERVATIVE AREA. NEVER! But it did. And the conversations on the way out - people were made, and they were energized. people were shaking their heads, nodding to each other, wiping tears, and several were thinking out loud about moving to France or Canada.

9. On Larry King, when the dialog started, Gupta effectively agreed with most of Moore's points
No question about it, the piece Gupta did was pure propaganda, but when confronted, effectively admitted the distortion. That in itself is significant

It is also signficant that CNN a MSM network did NOT censor this. It was a free dialog where the issues were discussed from all sides.

That in itself is amazing especially looking at the one sided outlook by the MSM for the last 15 years, which include the Clinton bashing years.

Maybe it is a start, I doubt it, but just maybe

Perhaps the Iraq war will come to the front now where the debate that should have taken place in 2003 can happen now, and we can get the heck out of there

in which he gets his own facts wrong, and his own facts that he uses are not that far off from michael moore's. so it's hard to figure out why he and cnn decided to target and nitpick moore's facts. moreover, he uses this "expert" to further his argument without adequately informing the viewer of exactly who this guy really was. now, media matters has caught him lying about this so-called expert.

Totally bogus lies, and you can tell that he knew he was lying, it was a conscious effort. What a dirtbag.

33. He kept calling Moore a liar, not agreeing with Moore except in the most supercilious way!
And he kept repeating his lies and distortions, as documented in the OP and Moore's site.

The only reason it was unedited was that Moore told Blitzer he would never appear on CNN any other way after the distorted and deceptive way they had used edited snippets from taped interviews to lie to the American people, not for some noble reason.

34. Take a look at the comments on his blog
http://www.cnn.com/HEALTH/blogs/paging.dr.gupta/2007/07/my-conversation-with-michael-moore.html

Some of my favorites -

Dr. Gupta, your nit-picking criticism of Michael Moore was disgraceful and beneath a man of your accomplishments.

You could have tried to have a real conversation with Moore but instead you just picked and picked at what you consider his "mushy" or "confusing" arguments -- that in the end...you basically agree with!

He caught YOU fudging. And instead of apologizing gracefully, you just continue to attack and smear. You've lost credibility as a reporter. I cannot take you seriously from this point forward, I'm afraid. If you aren't a sympathetic shill for the health industry then you may be too hypersensitive to know when you've been made a fool of and stop picking a fight you can't win.

Shameful.

........................................

I'm sure your uninsured viewers are really appreciative of all the medical advice you provide for which they will never be rich enough, or insured enough to partake of.

I certainly believe that you think that you're not beholding to any pharma corporation, but on this side of the screen, when all we see are puff pieces aimed at the status quo jet setters (don't east those greasy pizzas when your vacationing on the beach) it's pretty easy for us to see that your not really that concerned with the poor.

How hard would it be to take your film crew out onto the streets and expose the situation as it exists for the working poor, and homeless?

Why is it that someone who puts out a couple of movies every decade or so had to bring this issues to the attention of the public, and someone who has daily face time with the whole country hasn't had the time to address such an "important" issue?

And no one really thinks that health care in those other countries is "free" ... what kind of morons do you take us for (oh yeah, I forgot, you DO take us for morons.)

Of course taxes will have to pay for the system, and yes it is extremely likely that taxes will go up ... but insurance premiums will disappear.

Also, when stats are given for per capita spending on health care, that's both public and private spending that they are talking about. So Canada's 10% GDP spending includes all the extra supplemental insurance that one might wish to partake of. So let's not say Moore is "fudging" the facts by not making minor issues perfectly clear while you yourself takes no responsibility for presenting all the details of your argument as well.

Now, if you are really serious about fixing the system, then lay off the cream puff reporting on issues that affect next to no one (older pregnant moms get genes screened, Are boardwalk delicacies the next target? for example) and start presenting real information that exposes the more relevant and important issues that face real citizens every day of their lives.

Be a doctor of the people, and not just a doctor of the rich for a change.

........................................

Dr. Gupta, if you are reading these comments, surely you must be shaking your head, wondering what you have fallen into the middle of. Perhaps I can offer some insight: Although you probably have not seen it in the circles in which you socialize, I can assure you that the majority of this nation's citizens are profoundly angry that they have been subjected to a substandard, greed-driven healthcare system that is bankrupting and/or killing tens of thousands of them every year. Michael Moore is addressing this injustice in a way no one else has. And for whatever ill-advised reason, you then proceeded to file a report that appeared to be designed to help the establishment discredit him. You see? That is how you have gotten into the spot you are in, with large numbers of viewers vowing they will never trust your reporting again.

I have no idea what your religion is. But if you are a man with a moral compass and a working conscience, I would think this turn of events would give you pause, and perhaps make you reflect: "Maybe American healthcare is more inadequate, more slipshod, more heartless, and more wrong than I have realized." God bless.

........................................

The MAJORITY of the posters agree with Michael Moore.

As far as the political contributions of the health-care industry stooge on the segment, Media Matters actually reported that all of his contributions ($8,500) were to Republican candidates, and that he hadn't donated any money to Democrats.
