Skinner: A suggestion for new forum: GD: Hot Topic du Jour
On occasion, DU becomes swamped w/numerous threads on the hot topic of the day (currently Cindy Sheehan). Since so many DUers apparently feel that these topics warrant numerous threads, and varying POV's, as well as a variety of articles, can be valuable, it might be beneficial to create a separate forum for these topics.

DUers, if you agree, please recommend this thread.

Thanks for your consideration.

6. They're not always duplicates, but often different articles or varying POVs on the same topic.

7. IMO, that should be up to the mods/Admin, based on the number of threads on the same topic.

5. Not a bad idea Skinner
...but do we have the organization between all the separate mods to be moving everything to the topic du'jour forum? It'd be a lot of work for our hardworking mods.

Then, the next time Michael Moore is on television, or * says something outrageous, or there's yet another Repuke sex scandal, all the threads about it can go in that forum, and not clog up the others.

It's not that I don't enjoy reading the threads, but they drown out all the other, more substantive discussions

22. I hope that you (& others) don't misunderstand my suggestion.
I didn't mean to suggest that the 'hot topics' were not substantive discussions. They can be anything from topics such as Hurricane Katrina to Valerie Plame to Alberto Gonzales to Anna Nicole... anything that elicits numerous threads.

24. precedent: They sort of did that with GD after the 2004 election...
IIRC, they had two GD forums, something like:
GD: Election
GD: Everything else

26. An easier solution we could all enjoy:
When you post an article you can click off a check box indicating which forum (ones you subscribe to, ie want on the list) to post it to - then have the election to have all the forums you select show their threads in GD (or some new place).

This way you could watch all the things you want, and all in one place and all the while people could also categorize things better.

Toss in a 24 hour hide thread by key word(s) in topic (though you could see them in your hidden threads page, another feature to add).

Just an idea :)

31. Mmmm....dunno, that might simply take the fun out of GD.
Edited on Thu Jul-12-07 07:44 PM by BullGooseLoony
GD's engine is the "hot" topics of the day. Other stuff then gets mixed in with those hot topics. That's what makes GD, GD.

Besides, I'm not sure how an idea like that would be moderated on a day-to-day basis. At what point does a certain topic get moved to this new forum? Wouldn't that take a little while anyway? GD: Politics works because everyone knows that the threads involving only the topic of Dem candidates go in that forum. I don't think this new forum, and the mods, could manage threads that were posted in GD erroneously. Too many people wouldn't know where/when to post on their topic.

Further, if the forum is limited to the latest breaking news and "hot" topics, which would really be the only criteria by which threads could be separated into the two forums quickly, then the forum wouldn't even really be that different than the LBN forum.

by the 18 pissing matches over Cindy Sheehan and so on...

Excellent idea! K&R

(on edit: yes, that would be different then Breaking News - it's not necessarily new, just important and not swallowed up by squabbles)

36. I don't understand all the angst over 'hot topics'. Why not just hide thread?
Or put certain members on ignore until the furor dies down. I just don't get why we have to segregate the forums ever more.

*that* deserved its own forum, and if I remember correctly, threads were being combined for a while.
