Want to help energy crisis? Heres one simple idea!
Edited on Sat Jul-14-07 12:25 PM by Zucca
Turn off ALL of your computer components at night. Shut down entirely. I read the stats on how much energy we use by leaving computers on 24/7 in this country and the amont of pollution we could stop is staggering. I would be willing to bet alot of you leave things like printers on when you are not using them for days on end...It wastes energy,,,shut down ALL components every night please...The air you clean up, might be your own!

GO METS!

One more thing, if you use more then 1/4 sheet of TP, I am reporting you to Cheryl Crow immediately...You best watch out!
\
:>)

You could also check to be sure you have power profile set to energy star...If you do that computer will toggle up to full power mode when nessesary and run on less consumption when you are just on one or two apps. If anyone wants the info how, I will post it! I do that and cannot notice any difference in performance, but save energy.

1. Yeah, right.
That idea is too simple for some. Not to mention having to wait for everything to power up and boot.

3. Thats the problem
Cost and convienience vs the big picture...We need to change those attitudes. We need to think about the little things as well as big things! The amount of carbon emmisions our country could save by shutting down unused computer technology is just STAGGERING,,,I wish I had links to the story, But Im certain most people would agree anyway!

SHUTTEM DOWN AT NIGHT FOLKS! PLEASE!

I have learned that if you watch your pennies, the dollars take care of themselves.

Metaphorically, the same holds true in all situations. Little things add up.

9. Hibernation is your friend
Hibernate writes everything in memory to disk so powering back up takes one tenth of the time. If you don't have the hibernation option, check into upgrading your BIOS.

20. I have hibernate, but run vista and I got a flash memory chip set to speed that up...
Uses prefetch to load programs used most...boots up very quickly...Its called ready boost. Works like a charm...and seems to help boot speed even though I run 4 gigs of high speed ram.

2. I must say
You will not see any major drop in utility bill...maybe just peenies or a few bucks...But imagine as all the computers add up...It becomes a major amount. The problem with our culture is we think cost first...not big picture...If it only costs me pennies a night I can afford it...However if we all got together and realized WE CANNOT AFFORD TO THINK THAT WAY...we could conserve power, take a bit of stress off the envviroment and truly help solve the problem by just doing little thing.

6. You could also unplug your computer.
Its using energy as long as its plugged in, even if its off.

29. the important part is the invertor
make sure it is sine wave as invertors put out square waves and some computers don't work well.

I have never used one, the power supply is fused anyway, and if it gets fried I can replace it for $40 bucks or so. Am I missing something?

28. You can blow out other components in a power surge,,,I have had it happen...
PS fuse is not going to help as much with high burst...like lightening.

37. It take more of a zap to trip the fuse/breaker
Edited on Sat Jul-14-07 02:09 PM by Warpy
than it does to fry a computer. The circuit breakers are just fine for toasters and lamps. Computers require surge protectors.

8. It will use that energy from the battery if you unplug it.
The battery on the mobo will kick in and use power then need to recharge,,,The power it uses from plugging in is pretty much just to keep time and date stuff accurate and to keep the bios ready isn't it?

Dual core processors use less power and if upgrading you can check for the power rating on them individually...I got a athlon 64 dually it is 2.4 gig but chokes down to 1 gig if it is only running a few pages,,,,energy profile is set right...AMD has cool and quiet, Intel has its own version now. You can even set energy scheme to run the system fans...I set mine with a controller because I know what apps use alot of juice and create heat...Also getting LCD moniter consumes like 40% less then a conventional one. There are alot of tips...LCD monitors are cheap now and rival the others in clarity quite well. You can get a decent LCD for like 150 now...probably a drop of 25% or more in just over a year.

15. I'm trying to learn more about electronics
To answer you question, I know that at least LED's are on inside the PCs even when they are in sleep mode. On a more technical level I'm not sure if the transformers, capacitors, etc. use slight amounts of power when they are not being used, but I wouldn't be surprised.

14. Well, there's a term for that and it's supposed to be listed
so when you go to buy an appliance, you can compare that passive consumption -- choose between microwave A and B and choose to buy the one that draws less. My brain won't give me the word.

Appliances get energy star ratings with a tag that shows usage...in a percentage compared to an average appliances use.

Though some seem to take it as such.

If you really want to see the sparks fly just mention PETA (either pro or con). Just remember to don your flame-retardant suit first.

24. One little thing to add...
As a systems administrator, just be aware that automatic Windows updates are scheduled for 3 a.m. by default. If you don't have your PC on at night you probably will want to make sure your OS updates are installed. I know this isn't a conservation issue but it's just another thing people should be aware of....

My auto update works and I never change the time. I am rarely if ever on computer at 3 am either. Maybe the computer updates as soon as I turn on after the schedule time has past?

36. Mine checks for updates "once a day" I don't even have a specific time...
I run Ubuntu Linux, and my computer checks for updates once a day, anytime it turns on. I know that when its left on past midnight that it checks then, but really, it doesn't matter, I turn off my computer before midnight, and sometimes, when updates are available, when I boot it up the next day, it tells me an updates is available, do I want to install it, etc.

30. I have been doing this for some time now
also unplug those little energy vampire lights on your Stereo system when not in use . Just hit the surge protecter. Basically the only things I leave plugged in all of the time are my fridge , freezer, stove , washer , drier.

By the way, hang clothes outdoors (if possible) and "fluff" them for a few minutes in the drier.
