The rich got richer when it came to presidential fundraising last quarter as the Democrats extended their big financial edge over the Republicans. And in both parties the financial gap between the leaders and the rest of the pack widened.

All told, the eight Democrats running for president raised more than $80 million from April 1 to June 30, while the 10 Republicans raised less than $50 million, according to the campaigns, most of which released their second-quarter data on Sunday.

The Democrats were led by Sen. Barack Obama, who raised $32.8 million, and Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, who raised $27 million. John Edwards raised $8.9 million; Gov. Bill Richardson raised $7 million, Sen. Chris Dodd raised $3.25 million; and Sen. Joe Biden raised $2.3 million.

The top Republican candidates raised less than their Democratic counterparts -- Rudy Giuliani took in $17.27 million, Mitt Romney $13.73 million and Sen. John McCain $11.3 million.

Money woes have transformed McCain from a contender to a long shot. His campaign announced that it spent more than it raised in the last quarter, leaving it with about $3.2 million cash on hand and a $1.8 million debt.

1. Exxon can afford to top off the GOP war chest!
If Bush will just let them gouge us until the next election.

2. I like to see the Dem drag in the money but
more money does not mean that person will win. If this was so we would still all be under the church in Rome and working the fields for some rich lord. For some reason, even if money means a lot, we add a lot of meaning to the word money that means nothing to many people and thoughts. Such as smart, good husband, good govt. and I could go on and on on this. Just a thought.
