Two American soldiers have been charged with pre-meditated murder in the death an Iraqi national near Kirkuk on June 23, the US military announced on Thursday.
Sgt. 1st Class Trey A. Corrales of San Antonio, Texas and Spc. Christopher P. Shore of Winder, Georgia are with Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 25th Infantry Division, currently attached to Multi-National Division - North, Iraq.
The Army's Criminal Investigative Division undertook an investigation after fellow soldiers alleged wrongdoing to military superiors, leading to one count of pre-meditated murder against Corrales and Shore, and suspension for their commanding officer.
The military statement clarifies: "While he is not a suspect in the case, Lt. Col. Michael Browder, 2 Battalion, 35 Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade 25th Infantry Division in Kirkuk, Iraq, was relieved by Maj. Gen. Benjamin R. Mixon, commander, Multi-National Division – North and Task Force Lightning, based on the totality of the circumstances surrounding this incident and due to a lack of confidence in his ability to command effectively."
No further details on the alleged incident are available at this time.
