Ventura police arrest man for torturing tortoise
Ventura police arrest man for torturing tortoise

VENTURA, Calif. (AP) - An arrest has been made in Ventura's case of the tortured tortoise.

An 18-year-old Ventura man was taken into custody today for investigation of slashing and stabbing Bob. The pet tortoise was stolen from the yard of an autistic boy.

"Tony" Mosqueda was booked at the county jail for investigation of cruelty to animals and grand theft.

Sergeant Jack Richards says witnesses to the torture of the 42-pound tortoise provided information that helped lead to the arrest.

The 25-year-old African spurred tortoise belongs to Dorothy and Bill Sullivan of Ventura and is a special friend of their six-year-old autistic son. The boy rarely spoke to people but chattered to the animal.

2. This guy definately qualifies as the Worst Person in the World
He steals the pet of an autistic boy and then tortures it.

He needs to do serious jail time with serious counseling

6. Yes, the perpetrator needs to be incarcerated for a long time
This is far from a "harmless prank"

According to a 1997 study done by the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) and Northeastern University, animal abusers are five times more likely to commit violent crimes against people and four times more likely to commit property crimes than are individuals without a history of animal abuse.

Many studies in psychology, sociology, and criminology during the last 25 years have demonstrated that violent offenders frequently have childhood and adolescent histories of serious and repeated animal cruelty. The FBI has recognized the connection since the 1970s, when its analysis of the lives of serial killers suggested that most had killed or tortured animals as children. Other research has shown consistent patterns of animal cruelty among perpetrators of more common forms of violence, including child abuse, spouse abuse, and elder abuse. In fact, the American Psychiatric Association considers animal cruelty one of the diagnostic criteria of conduct disorder.

Tortured Tortoise Recovering
...
The attacker or attackers tried to get the animal out of its shell, officials said.

"They threw this 40-pound turtle against a brick wall. You could see blood where the leg was (hurt) ... they tried to rip the leg out of the shell," police Sgt. Jack Richards said.

Razor blades also were used to cut the leg, Richards said, but Bob's tough hide and heavy musculature foiled that. He had three deep wounds to his neck and legs, including one that went through his thigh, along with lesser stab wounds to his shell.

He has been confined to a tub with a fly-proof cover and had a feeding tube in his neck.

11. This is horrific! Not only does this sick f*ck neede to be confined, he needs serious
psychological counseling. The first step with serial killers is usually to torture animals. We all know that if he'has to serve time, it won't be for very long. If i lived in Ventura, i wouldn't feel very safe with someone like him on the street.

Sending hugs to that poor tortoise and his boy!!!!!

12. I have been, frequently, verbally abused by drivers around here for
stopping my car, blocking traffic for 30 seconds and picking up a turtle (tortoise) off the road and depositing it on the side of the road it was trying to reach. Last week, I saw 2 of them in the road...obviously a mama and her small turtlet attempting to cross. I avoided hitting them and turned around to tend to them but it was too late for the mama turtle, someone had squashed her and the little tiny one was (I am not making this up) actually running around her remains, obviously in distress. I picked up the little guy and brought him back to our property and set him out in the high grass we don't mow.
