that the speaker of the House be a member of the House, the House has never chosen a non-member as their speaker, and very likely would not choose a Senator for that role.
19. You're right of course. Sorry! I've been trying to think of someone who
has impressed me in front of the cameras! That part is as important as what adjenda is set in the House. To be a good speaker and be able to deal well with the media is a BIG ADVANTAGE!
26. Given power's poor track record for listening, speaking truth to it is overrated
as a tactic for influencing policy decisions.
The best trait a Speaker could have is the ability to get the Blue Dogs and DLC to get their shit together and support a progressive agenda -- that is actually getting quality bills and resolutions passed. It's unclear if Pelosi is the best person for this job, but it's unlikely Kucinich would be doing any better.
... like it or not, you have to have a centrist in that position who doesn't make a target of himself. Look at what happened to Newt Gingrich on the other side of the spectrum.
For starters, Conyers would not have "taken Impeachment off the table". He is no wuss. He is talkin' Inherent Contempt which would be immediate, not a long drawn out Court battle which would render normal Contempt moot. Conyers doesn't go around holding hands with Busholini. Just a few things off the top of my mind. I will think of more as the day progresses.
are more emotionally satisfying, is it really "effective"?
Conyers has no more power to get 18 Republican senators to vote for removal than Pelosi does. He has no more power to get Republicans to override a veto than Pelosi does.
22. Conyers would have more power to get Impeachment
Proceedings started on Cheney, which Pelosi has never ever spoken about. Sometimes I suspect that the Regime has something over Pelosi that renders her compliant to the Fascists. I also beleive that Conyers would not have caved into Busholini on the Funding Bill.
