CRYING watching Cat Stevens on "Nobel Peace Prize Concert" honoring Muhammad Yunus & Grameen Bank!!
Edited on Sun Jul-22-07 08:50 PM by BigBearJohn

Oh God!   If there's anything that could remotely renew
my faith in believing in God, it's the power of music.

I'm sitting here blubbering all over my keyboard as I type
this.   I just saw "Cat Stevens" performing on the TV special
"Nobel Peace Prize Concert."    His performance brought me back
to a time when I had hope for the world.    The raw beauty of
his music, the power of his message and the commitment in his
voice overwhelmed me.

We truly need to support the artists of the world who keep our
eyes focused on the LIGHT.

Music transcends the petty differences of mankind... unifying us,
humbling us, lifting us all to a higher place, where people
can truly feel the humanity in each other, reminding us that
we're all here just for a short breath of time... and all is
truly not lost as long as there's love.

"Peace Train"
by Cat Stevens

Now I've been happy lately,
thinking about the good things to come
And I believe it could be,
something good has begun

Oh I've been smiling lately,
dreaming about the world as one
And I believe it could be,
some day it's going to come

Cause out on the edge of darkness,
there rides a peace train
Oh peace train take this country,
come take me home again

Now I've been smiling lately,
thinking about the good things to come
And I believe it could be,
something good has begun

Oh peace train sounding louder
Glide on the peace train
Come on now peace train
Yes, peace train holy roller

Everyone jump upon the peace train
Come on now peace train

Get your bags together,
go bring your good friends too
Cause it's getting nearer,
it soon will be with you

Now come and join the living,
it's not so far from you
And it's getting nearer,
soon it will all be true

Now I've been crying lately,
thinking about the world as it is
Why must we go on hating,
why can't we live in bliss

Cause out on the edge of darkness,
there rides a peace train
Oh peace train take this country,
come take me home again

6. I've been listening to a lot of Cat Stevens lately
I bought a greatest hits CD and his new one too. It's very good. He has been one of my favorites for years. I am so glad he is recording again.

And Peace Train is one of the best peace songs ever.

that came out last year and downloaded other stuff off of iTunes.

16. yeah, how do those of you who like Peace Train square it with Yusuf (Stevens') views about Rushdie?
I'm still upset enough about it to not believe him when he sings about peace.

And with the media the way it is, that certainly wouldn't surprise me.

26. Misinterpreted? Judge for yourself. Here's the video. He's lying when he blames the media.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N7KnWHDFsjo

He says Rushdie deserves to die but that he is not "necessarily" obligated to kill him "unless in an Islam country and ordered to do so"

When asked if he would go to a protest where Rushdie was burned in effegy Cat says "I would hope it would be the real thing."

One thing nice about our digital age, people can no longer blame the media for "misinterpreting" them.

It seems outrageous to me for him to blame the media in light of his own words.

Which is the real Cat Stevens? The Peace Train or the "Rushdie deserves to die".

29. From the horse's mouth...
"I never called for the death of Salman Rushdie; nor backed the Fatwa issued by the Ayatollah Khomeini--and still don’t. The book itself destroyed the harmony between peoples and created an unnecessary international crisis...

When asked about my opinion regarding blasphemy, I could not tell a lie and confirmed that--like both the Torah and the Gospel--the Qur’an considers it, without repentance, as a capital offense. The Bible is full of similar harsh laws if you’re looking for them. However, the application of such Biblical and Qur’anic injunctions is not to be outside of due process of law, in a place or land where such law is accepted and applied by the society as a whole..."

30. So, he's saying death for blasphemy is okay as long as you give due process
tripe. It wasn't Rushdie who "destroyed the harmony between peoples" it was the leaders of Islam.

I get to say what I want. The society can ignore me, disagree with me, hate me. But as with the Danish cartoons, Rushdie and the Danish publishers did not incite the riot, the riot (distruction of the harmony) was manufactured by Muslim leaders for political purposes.

We are either going to live in a world of ideas or we are going to live in a world of superstition. When people like Cat Stevens say Rushdie was wrong because he destroyed the harmony (WHAT harmony?) or that the death penalty is okay for blasphemy in some countries and with due process you leave the world of ideas and enter head strong into the world of superstition.

It is a tragedy that Cat Stevens, who could be a great spokesperson for his religion, drank the Kool Aid.

31. No, he's saying that's what the Koran says.
The Bible says people who eat clams should be stoned to death.

I don't agree with it, but that's what the Bible says.

"It is a tragedy that Cat Stevens, who could be a great spokesperson for his religion, drank the Kool Aid. "

Oh, the irony...

32. so, if he said stoning people to death if they eat clams should only be done
with due process in a place where such law is accepted and applied by the society as a whole, that works for you? With 90% of Americans Christian, if Congress passed a law saying let's stone people who eat clams, that would work for you? Better still, what if Congress passed a law making it punishable BY DEATH to say anything bad about Christians or the government (they are one in the same under the system advocated by the Koran). You wouldn't object if 90% of us voted for it?

I don't even get your comment about irony. I was in favor of the sanctions against South Africa for civil rights abuses. Are you saying if they do it in the name of the Bible or the Koran it's okay? Slavery? Burkas? Female genital mutilation? Fine as long as its what the majority wants?

Killing people who speak out against the state is wrong. We should fight against it wherever it is. Stevens thinks it's okay if a group of people agree to kill people for their words. How is that right?
