Or will we "just use" 30,000 pound bombs?
PALMDALE - Northrop Grumman is beginning work to make the batwinged B-2 stealth bomber capable of carrying a 30,000-pound bomb under development that would destroy deeply buried targets.
Under a seven-month, $2.5 million Air Force contract, Northrop Grumman is looking at how to make the bomber capable of carrying two of the new bombs in its weapon payload bay. The bomber, called the Massive Ordnance Penetrator, or MOP for short, is being developed by the Boeing Co.
The bomb is composed of more than 5,300 pounds of explosives inside a 20.5-foot-long hardened steel casing. The bomb will be capable of destroying deeply buried targets, such as tunnels and bunkers.
