Need some advice. I'm being texted unsolicited stock tips
to my cell phone. I got one tip at about 11:30pm last night, and another one about 10am this morning. Now, I work nights, so I don't want my phone buzzind day and night here. I have my phone set so it keeps alerting every two minutes until I look at the message, so the thing will be waking me up out of a sound slumber if I don't stop it.

I'm on the national do-not-call registry and have been so for maybe a year. Does this qualify as a telemarketing call? Can I sic the feds on them? It' coming from a 6-digit number, 265060, so I'm guessing it's a computer doing it.

Some advice is requested.

3. Buy low, sell high
It was my impression that the Do Not Call list applied to ground-lines, though I admit that I formed that impression long before I had a cell.

9. The FCC site says it can be a home or mobile phone
The National Do Not Call Registry gives you a choice about whether to receive telemarketing calls at home. Most telemarketers should not call your number once it has been on the registry for 31 days. If they do, you can file a complaint at this Website. You can register your home or mobile phone for free. Your registration will be effective for five years.

https://www.donotcall.gov/default.aspx

I've gotten other solicitiation phone calls before, but they don't leave messages and I think they were telemarketing firms for the Pi Press calling, trying to get me to re-up. I was able to trace one phone number back to a web site of people complaining about the Pi Press (among other companies) using a firm that owned that number, at least.

I'm just not sure if it qualifies as an unsolicited phone call or spam!

4. you're probably being charged $.50 - $1.00 apiece for them...
did anyone ask to "borrow" your cellphone for just a minute, have a short conversation, then give your phone back? They might have signed you up for these.

10. No, not anybody I didn't trust, and not in the last few months
I signed up for a 'free' ringtone about six months ago, and when they started billing me $9.95 a month T-Mobile removed the charges and blackballed them. Haven't had any problems since.

5. Do you have your phone registered with an IM program?
I get stuff occasionally because my mobile is registered with AOL IM.

11. Subject: No, but the 'tip' did have an AOL-IM userid in there
some godawful combination of letters and numbers.

Actually, the two messages I got both had the same stock tip but different AOL-IM userids.

I use Yahoo! IM, but not on my cell phone, and I haven't been on there since December.

It's a mystery

Outta curiosity, could you check and see if it was this number...265006 or 92237? I ask because the precise same thing happened to me at the approximate time it happened to you.

I have a pretty guarded phone number (friends, family and a few trusted, local companies I owe money to), so I was a bit surprised to get this stuff myself, too.

On edit: I'm in north central texas

25. Update: silence since them.
I texted "Stop" to them yesterday before I headed off for work and got back a message saying that the user wasn't available. But I haven't gotten any text messages since. So I hope it worked!

6. What we did in our office
Reply with the single word, "STOP."

Then call your cell provider, and ask them to block all messages from that number.

17. Well, I called T-Mobile.
They advised me to tell them to "stop sending", so I did. Also gave me the "do not call" phone number, which I will call later today.

T-Mobile says they can't block the number from texting me, but they can change my phone number if necessary. Last thing I want to do.

20. at this point, if they text this often, don't worry about "encouraging them"
they are already texting you daily, they either know its active or don't care whether it is or not.

7. They texted me at 1:20 am. Also 265060.
I just got one and I have a 203 area code phone number. They were using AOL IM. I will have to check my AOL accounts to see if they are spamming me there.

Hmmm... so it's probably NOT from a list of former subscribers to the St. Paul Pioneer Press... :-)

they can only block all incomming messages, not from a particular number. I'm going to contact the company FDKE=Frederick's Entertainment next
