I watched "Independence Day" again last night...
It's a great movie; I think Will Smith does a fabulous job of bringing just the right level of camp to his character. But I just can't get past some parts that are just too fantastic to entertain as even the most far-fetched fiction. In the film the President is portrayed as a knowledgeable, ethical and extremely competent statesman. He is a decisive leader who when told the country is under attack, swings into action instantly and in one scene is shown personally commanding an air strike! It's a good film but there are limits to my suspension of disbelief.

2. Could you picture Bush hopping in an F-16 to lead the attack against the aliens?
And giving that moving, inspiring speech before? Yes, there were some extremely farfetched moments in that movie.

5. i STILL can't get past the 6 hour drive from manhattan to the white house...
with judd hirsch's old jewish man character at the wheel while both cities(and possibly philly) are being evacuated. and then there's always the thing about the aliens being mac-compatible.

8. Yeah, but I think the aliens used Windows
otherwise the virus wouldn't have worked.

13. The computer thing never bugged me so much
I always figured they had the fighter for like 20 years so they had some hacker reconstruct its OS and networking protocols. Once you do that, it wouldn't be that hard to smash a stack or overflow a heap somewhere.

17. These aliens could destroy entire cities...
and be impervious to a nuclear blast... But they were felled by a virus from a Mac??

Well, shoved him against a wall and fired him for being a complete moron. Will have to pull that movie out.
