KO reports breaking --AP Has Obtained Intel Report Proves Gonzo Lied Under Oath! LINK
Edited on Wed Jul-25-07 07:39 PM by Blackhatjack
http://www.usatoday.com/news/washington/2007-07-25-documents-gonzales_N.htm

"WASHINGTON (AP) — Documents indicate eight congressional leaders were briefed about the Bush administration's terrorist surveillance program on the eve of its expiration in 2004, contradicting sworn Senate testimony this week by Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.
The documents, obtained by The Associated Press, come as senators consider whether a perjury investigation should be opened into conflicting accounts about the program and a dramatic March 2004 confrontation leading up to its potentially illegal reauthorization.

A Gonzales spokesman maintained Wednesday that the attorney general stands by his testimony.

At a heated Senate Judiciary Committee hearing Tuesday, Gonzales repeatedly testified that the issue at hand was not about the terrorist surveillance program, which allowed the National Security Agency to eavesdrop on suspects in the United States without receiving court approval.

HEARING: Senate panel questions Gonzales' credibility

Instead, Gonzales said, the emergency meetings on March 10, 2004, focused on an intelligence program that he would not describe."

He just reported that the AP has announced in the last hour they obtained a 4 page intel report that proves Gonzo lied under oath about the Terrorist Surveillance Program yesterday before the SJC.

Gonzo in big trouble.

1. KO reports that the four page report mentions only the Terrorist Surveillance Program ....
... as the reason for the Gonzo hospital visit with Ashcroft, directly contradicting the sworn testimony Gonzo gave yesterday to the SJC.

5. I believe if Congress were to move forward with impeachment of Gonzo then....
Gonzo would resign and invoke the 5th Amendment Privilege rather than answer any more questions.

Of course in that case, 'Fredo' would want to stay away from small planes, tall buildings, and offers to go on fishing trips.

14. We have never had a proven liar hold office as the Attorney General...
... and Gonzo could definitely be disbarred as a lawyer for lying under oath.

This is way beyond mere confusion and inadvertence. He intentionally lied. A crime.

We don't usually allow the criminals to make decisions on which other criminals will be prosecuted.

20. Just the initiation of impeachment proceedings against Gonzo would help end this...
You know Gonzo is not going to answer any further questions under oath when charged with blatantly lying under oath to Congress AND the evidence he lied has already been publicized.

It is the threat of impeachment that caused Nixon to resign.

THe same would likely occur here with a contingent of Congressional Repubs paying Bush a visit and explaining they don't want to play defense and obstruction on this one with reelections coming up.
They likely would tell Bush it is time for Gonzo to go, and if he does not it will draw Bush into an impeachment action of his own.

31. I wonder where they got that 4 page intel report from?
"The dissent related to other intelligence activities," Gonzales testified at Tuesday's hearing. "The dissent was not about the terrorist surveillance program."

"Not the TSP?" responded Sen. Charles E. Schumer, D-N.Y. "Come on. If you say it's about other, that implies not. Now say it or not."

"It was not," Gonzales answered. "It was about other intelligence activities."
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070725/ap_on_go_ca_st_pe/congress_gonzales

Schumer, led him around by the nose and Gonzo didn't even realize where he was taking him. Gonzo's supposed to be an attorney, right? He's supposed to have been trained in such strategies.

Then somehow the AP gets the information on his perjury.

Someone is doing a heck-of-a-job, but it's not Gonzo.

35. This is a truly big story... there is no way for Gonzo to 'fix' this transgression....
He was very specific yesterday in relating the information about this other intelligence program, not the Terrorists Surveillance Program.

What is he going to say? Oh right, there was no other intelligence surveillance program, I don't know where I got that idea. LOL

It is rare to have documentary proof that evidences a high public official lied under oath.

But it sure looks like that is what we have on our hands now....

39. A few days ago, there was a post observing that Gonzo has been careful to equivocate.
he would preface each answer with; "The program which we are discussing..."

Maybe he's telling the truth. There is more than one administration program which is used to spy on Americans, and this is what the "8 congressional leaders" were briefed about.

42. Or this is an intel surveillance activity that Congress has not been told about....
No one knows exactly what was in the document that Gonzo took with him to Ashcroft's hospital room, and exactly what it would have authorized that Comey refused to sign off on.

If Ashcroft had signed that document, it could have authorized surveillance activities that the 'Gang of Eight' were never told about. It is possible that the story that this involved only the existing Terrorist Surveillance Program was a cover.

Gonzo's problem is that he said the 'Gang of EIght' knew it was about other intelligence surveillance activities and that they wanted Ashcroft to sign off on it. Certainly not true under any scenario.

It would not surprise me to learn that Repubs on the Hill 'leaked' the intel report that the AP got to force Bush's hand to get rid of Gonzo.

Repub Senators are certainly not looking forward to defending Gonzo, and it gives them leverage with Bush/Cheney to demand that he get rid of him.
