ALEC "is a conservative organisation that pushes legislation that favours big business and rollbacks environmental regulations." They're pro-big tobacco and anti-environment, so of course Bush is going to do everything he can to suck up to his fellow corporatists.

Here's a telling quote from the SourceWatch page linked above:

In 2002, Exxon donated $193,200 to ALEC. The following year this had jumped to $290,000, including $140,000 specifically earmarked for "global climate change" and a further $50,000 for "energy and climate change".

He did appear live. The video screen was just for people (like me) who didn't have the right kind of pass to get in to see him.

Although... I didn't really want to see him. I slept in that day. A state senator I spoke with confided in me that he was going to spend the morning working out instead of seeing Bush.

In the recent Smashing Pumpkins album, there are photos of various artwork in the CD booklet.

One of which features the Grim Reaper standing at a podium with the Presidential Seal on it pointing directly at you. He is surrounded by secret servicemen in suits with stern, serious looks on their faces (much like in this picture). I'm guessing Billy Corgan and Company were trying to make a statement with that one.

Life imitates art, eh?
