8. Schumer was the most pissed
he was not prepared to wait for any corrections to testimony. When Gonzo's people announced that he stands by his testimony, that was the straw that broke the camel's back.

Edited on Thu Jul-26-07 10:13 AM by Botany
and so was Sen. Whitehouse, Jeff Sessions, Schumer, and Specter

Pat also said that it is obstruction of justice if bush gives an illegal order
to block any investigation.

26. It think it's fair to say a LOT of people were PISSED at Gonzo yesterday!
Along with Leahey & Schumer, Spector was literally yelling at him, & Feinstein called him a liar! I just watched that hearing AGAIN this morning. It's still posted on the c-span home page. I honestly don't EVER recall seeing so many Senators display such disgust and contempt toward the head of any Dept. before!

I don't care if the Dems succeed or not--I do care when they don't even try, especially when it's part of their job. I'd MUCH rather see them try and fail than spend the next eighteen months watching them cower in a corner and snivel about not having enough votes or being bullied by O'Reilly and Rush!

66. It is way far from meaningless -
An example: Not following through on the Nixon administration opened the doors to the hell we are in now.

When good men do nothing, evil triumphs.

But, I do understand what your saying and the heartrending frustration behind your words.

The gangsters in the White House and their newly formed Executive Justice Department are using twisted versions of our laws to circumvent the Constitution. Congress MUST honor their oath of office and protect our Democracy. I've been calling and writing to all of them and reminding them of that oath.

I do have a question if anyone knows - just who is paying the extra 8 (or maybe more by now) lawyers the White House hired a few months ago to help battle the Democrats in Congress? This has been gnawing at me like crazy because I sure don't like the insulting idea of my tax dollars being used on lawyers who are nothing but legal henchmen protecting the crooks and liars destroying our republic; AND I have no stomach for them to hire more if we do get a special counsel.

30. Leading up to an August resignation back then.
Edited on Thu Jul-26-07 10:28 AM by Jackpine Radical
Easiest quiz of the day: Who said the following words on August 8, 1974?

In all the decisions I have made in my public life, I have always tried to do what was best for the Nation. Throughout the long and difficult period of Watergate, I have felt it was my duty to persevere, to make every possible effort to complete the term of office to which you elected me.

In the past few days, however, it has become evident to me that I no longer have a strong enough political base in the Congress to justify continuing that effort. As long as there was such a base, I felt strongly that it was necessary to see the constitutional process through to its conclusion, that to do otherwise would be unfaithful to the spirit of that deliberately difficult process and a dangerously destabilizing precedent for the future.

But with the disappearance of that base, I now believe that the constitutional purpose has been served, and there is no longer a need for the process to be prolonged.

I would have preferred to carry through to the finish whatever the personal agony it would have involved, and my family unanimously urged me to do so. But the interest of the Nation must always come before any personal considerations.

From the discussions I have had with Congressional and other leaders, I have concluded that because of the Watergate matter I might not have the support of the Congress that I would consider necessary to back the very difficult decisions and carry out the duties of this office in the way the interests of the Nation would require.

I have never been a quitter. To leave office before my term is completed is abhorrent to every instinct in my body. But as President, I must put the interest of America first. America needs a full-time President and a full-time Congress, particularly at this time with problems we face at home and abroad.

To continue to fight through the months ahead for my personal vindication would almost totally absorb the time and attention of both the President and the Congress in a period when our entire focus should be on the great issues of peace abroad and prosperity without inflation at home.

Therefore, I shall resign the Presidency effective at noon tomorrow. Vice President Ford will be sworn in as President at that hour in this office.

to allow WH. documents to go public, Example: missing then found 60,000+ emails still aren't being handed over and this covers Rove's pre-2004 election emails from Ohio that those in the know (Bill Clinton) claim could be incriminating. Dems call for Gonzales perjury probe

Associated Press
Thursday, July 26, 2007

WASHINGTON (AP) A group of Senate Democrats called Wednesday for a special counsel to investigate whether Attorney General Alberto Gonzales perjured himself regarding the firings of U.S. attorneys and administration dissent over President Bush's domestic surveillance program.

"We ask that you immediately appoint an independent special counsel from outside the Department of Justice to determine whether Attorney General Gonzales may have misled Congress or perjured himself in testimony before Congress," four Democratic senators wrote in a letter Wednesday, according to a draft obtained by The Associated Press.

"It has become apparent that the Attorney General has provided at a minimum half-truths and misleading statements" to the Judiciary Committee, they added.

43. Wow !!!!
Specter said he was incredulous that the administration would not allow the U.S. attorney to prosecute a contempt citation. He said that means the president is claiming sole authority to determine when executive privilege applies.

"That cannot stand up in a constitutional democracy," the senator said.

He said Congress at this point has several options:

-Appoint a special prosecutor to handle the criminal contempt citations.

-Switch to civil contempt proceedings.

-Impeachment, or inherent contempt proceedings.

"I would still like to see it worked out," Specter said.

He said Bush is right to fight hard for the institutional power of the executive branch, and that every branch must do this or see its powers erode. But executive privilege is "always a judgment call," Specter added, and never absolute. He said that the other branches of government must be able to have checks on them when it applies.

50. They've actually got enough to start impeachment proceedings.
Proof of perjured testimony under oath before Congress and a very public vow nott to carry out the sworn duties of the Attorney General of the US, when he said he won't appoint any justice officials to address contempt of Congress charges brought against anyone hiding behind Executive Privilege. He's refusing to do his lawful duties as chief justice officer of the US serving the Constitution he swore to uphold. Exsqueeze me, baking powder. seems they don't even need a special prosecutor to prove impeachable offenses by Gonzo. IMHO, he should have been arrested right then and there after his testimony this week. Outrageous outright lies, and now with documented proof.

I have not seen anything like this from a witness...misled congress and the American people time and time again. We simply cannot stand this any longer...obviously he cannot investigate himself....ask that they appoint a Special Counsel from outside the Justice Department so there can be no conflict of interest real or attendant....we cannot let this abuse of power remain unchecked.

73. They're discussing it now
showed DiFi for about two seconds. She simply said he prevaricated - i.e. is a fugging LIAR. Viqueira on now.

53. They have referred it to the Soliciter General according to the article
However, it does not necessarily mean that the SG (Clement) will appoint a special prosecutor. Also, Leahy wasn't one of the 4 Senators that sent the referral to Clement, it was Schumer, Feingold, Whitehouse, and DiFi.

59. Bush is sweating...Gonzo is the boneman, the problem is that he isn't a very good liar, so where the
bones are buried is going to be easier to find with this criminal than with others....

I predict that Gonzo will be wanting to spend time with his family soon....

I predict the day will also come when he is disbarred....

64. I know, the number of let downs in the last 6 years has been too numerous to count...
Frankly, for awhile its gotten to the point (between Fitzmas and the commutation of Scooter Libby and even the Plame Civil Suit being thrown out lately) that I don't even want to look forward to anything.

But, this is different. The evidence against Gonzo is stacking up and its been publicly witnessed and the reality is that Conyers has been very careful in putting this case together, made easier by the arrogance, hubris and flat out crappy lying by Gonzo.

We can never give up on hope and I think this may be not only what sticks, but will open up Pandora's Box.

And I still stick to my prediction - Gonzo wanting family time soon and sometime in the next few years, him being not much different in the eyes of the public than Mike Nifong (of Duke Lacrosse fame) being disbarred and never being allowed to ever serve in public office or the law.

74. I think he'll hold out until the bitter end
Until he's actually indicted for perjury and/or lying to Congress, or until impeachment becomes a likely possibility.

78. I agree....but indictment for perjury and lying to Congress aren't far away...
And if he doesn't resign to seek more "family time", I believe he will be impeached and removed from the Office of AG.

83. big fucking deal.
Gonzo? why aren't they investigating Bush and Cheney?

Why aren't they investigating REAL Bush crimes, like the reason he invaded Iraq? Or why he outed Valerie Plame? Or why he spied on Americans illegally?

Horseshit.
