Scientist: Marijuana Could Make You Crazy, Only We Just Can't Prove It
Now this is a perfect example of a bullshit "news story." Why? Because the lede says one thing but the text of the story refutes the lede. But then its CNN. They do that all the time now.....

Marijuana may increase psychosis risk, analysis says
Analysis of past research reignites the issue of whether pot is dangerous

CNN (AP)
Fri July 27, 2007

LONDON, England (AP) -- Using marijuana seems to increase the chance of becoming psychotic, researchers report in an analysis of past research that reignites the issue of whether pot is dangerous. Some experts governments should now work to dispel a misconception that marijuana is a benign drug.

The new review suggests that even infrequent use could raise the small but real risk of this serious mental illness by 40 percent. Doctors have long suspected a connection and say the latest findings underline the need to highlight marijuana's long-term risks.

The research, paid for by the British Health Department, is being published Friday in medical journal The Lancet. "The available evidence now suggests that cannabis is not as harmless as many people think," said Dr. Stanley Zammit, one of the study's authors and a lecturer in the department of psychological medicine at Cardiff University.

The researchers said they couldn't prove that marijuana use itself increases the risk of psychosis, a category of several disorders with schizophrenia being the most commonly known.

*** - Where the hell do they pull these numbers from? You know. The only thing that this "research" ignites, is my bullshit meter. Meanwhile, time for another doobie while I still have my sanity.....

1. The study did not include
whether or not the subjects were using drugs other then pot. Even "legal" drugs like alcohol can also affect mental health let alone anti-depressants, there have not been studies on the effects of pot when done in combination with other drugs. I was going to say meth which can most certainly cause psychosis, but the study was done in the UK and the Netherlands, and I am not sure how much of a problem it is there.

3. Although I'm not religious.....
...in any sense. I have but one response:

Cannabis has been on the earth forever and still will be when these "scientists" are worm food. Hey here's an idea, why not try to discover a cure for a REAL disease for a change? Like breast cancer?

7. So has tobacco and hemlock
Just because something is natural doesn't mean that it's good for you. Not that I put too much stock into what this article says, but I'm just tired of hearing the "Ohh... it's all natural so it must be good for you" thing.

2. Am I crazy,
or are they positing conclusions even though they can't rule out other causes or incidental correlations?

They may come up with what they think are "groovy" thoughts, but they really do need to know that in the real world, science has rules.

4. As we've seen with the global warming issue....
...there are "scientists" out there with absolutely no integrity. They'll "discover" whatever you need them to find. As long as the price is right!

6. And Al Gore has the perfect word for those scientists:
He calls them "outliers".

It's poetic, really.

5. It probably could make *me* crazy...
But it probably *couldn't* make the vast majority of human beings crazy. They are not as easilly made crazy as me.

8. This is what science has become!
Come up with a politically pleasing conclusion and beat the bushes for grants to prove it must be true - and oh yeah - write "reviews of the literature" to support the theory.

Reviews of the literature are usually very selective but make the "scientist" sound important.

10. And when that's not possible....
...you can always "invent" your own science. Like Creationism. Sounds catchy too!

11. They self medicate
They are connecting pot to some mental illnesses because thos people can use it to stay calm without all the side affects. Plus, we have such a shitty mental health system, that people smoke instead of seeing a psychiatrist anyway.

Do they really not get it?

12. The psychosis may be preexisting and the users are -
self medicating. It's really common for especially for people undiagnosed to use various drugs from alcohol, nicotine to heroin to make then "feel" better.
