Ketchum: Tammy Faye set example of strong faith
<snip>
I have to admit I’d lost track of Tammy Faye for a long time. I’d more or less dismissed her as a dimwitted accessory to fleecing the flock. The Bakkers’ names only reminded me why I loathe televangelists, mostly because they have the uncanny power to charm the Social Security checks right out of the purses of unsuspecting little old ladies.
They are frauds, and that ain’t Christian.
Yet during her post-PTL period, Tammy Faye tried to redeem herself in more than a few ways. She continued to testify to her faith in God and was one of the few high-profile evangelicals to come out in support of gays. She said when she’d lost everything, “it was the gay people that came to my rescue, and I will always love them for that.”
<snip>
In the end, Tammy Faye sought the respect she craved during PTL’s heyday by getting as far away from that chapter in her life as she could.
The jury’s still out on whether she succeeded.
