parts of Little Rock Lake are giving off hydrogen sulfide gas (Minn.)

Benton County has closed the swimming beach at Benton Beach Park on Little Rock Lake due to hazardous levels of blue-green algae. The swimming beach will remain closed indefinitely. The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency on Wednesday confirmed the presence of a toxic form of blue-green algae, which can pose a health risk to humans and animals. A layer of algae about 6 inches thick and extending more than 100 yards from shore has raised concerns about water and air quality among lakeshore residents. MPCA officials also informed the county Friday that air quality testing has shown elevated levels of hydrogen sulfide gas near the lake. The gas is emitted by decaying algae, producing a rotten-egg smell. State officials said hydrogen sulfide can be harmful to people with asthma or other respiratory conditions, and those people should avoid exposure to the gas if possible. Benton Beach Park, east of Rice, is the county’s most popular park and features a campground, swimming beach, playground and conference center.)

1. Green Peter Reservoir has a dark secret
Visitors report gurgling, murky water; geothermal eruptions suspected

SWEET HOME, Ore. -- There's something strange afoot at Green Peter Reservoir.

Visitors have been reporting churning and gurgling murky water, and small explosions of debris.

Mandy Kauffman said she and her husband camped with friends Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the 13.5 milepost area on Green Peter.

"Saturday morning, my husband, Ben, was wakeboarding when he yelled at us to turn the boat around," she said. "We all saw it. We stopped the boat and saw a perfect circle, about 25 feet in diameter. There was some debris coming up. It was really dark, like a black hole."

3. We had a small lake with the same problem and the smell was awful.
They first said it was a natural event, as the algae would recycle itself. I haven't heard if it has been resolved. Interesting.

4. I can't imagine wanting to swim in 6 inches of algae
that smelled like rotten eggs. I don't imagine the sign had many swimmers to discourage.

5. imagine swimming in the New York lakes that have fish
that bleed when you touch them. Some have lesions and what not, and when you touch them near the anal fin, they bleed. Isn't that totally normal for fish in Lake Oswego?
