I wonder how many coasters rushed to their maps

to find Idaho and Minnesota, and to realize that Idaho, Iowa and Ohio are three different states..

I was thinking of us, the "fly over states" during the Bill Maher show, when he obviously was having hard time explaining Idaho and Minnesota, and when he had hard time following John Mellencamp's descriptions of "middle America" expecting their leaders to tell them the truth and using the term "naive."

2. For many people living in either coast

they have no idea of where Idaho and Minnesota (the "stars" in the Craig affair) are, or where many of the states in the middle of the country are.

but why do you think these states are referred to as "fly over?"

And, yes, Bill Maher did comment that there is nothing else to do in St. Paul, except to visit that special restroom. Sure he was joking, but I can see many who would wonder about that, too.

...is that when you're from the midwest you meet a lot of people who haven't a clue where we're from.
I've had people confuse Michigan and MInnesota on a map. Lots of similar stuff....

during the bridge collapse aftermath, I kept hearing national reporters and anchors describing 35W as the major link between Minneapolis and St. Paul
It goes nowhere near St. Paul.

geography counts.
