Sen. Craig's arresting officer a bigot?
Sgt. Karsnia made this statement after arresting Craig and interrogating him:

"I guess I'm gonna say I'm just disappointed in you, sir, I just really am," Sgt Karsnia said. "I expect this from the guy we get out of the 'hood. I mean, people vote for you."

now I guess you could argue that "the hood" has been around so long it's a generic term, or in cop parlance it could be taken to signify any bad neighborhood BUT....

It seems to me that Karsnia is saying to the Senator: "We expect young black men to behave this way but as an aging white man you should avoid it."

1. Reads more like a class stereotype than anything else

As you say, "'hood" generally just means the poor neighborhood. Yes, race is irrevocably tied to class in this country, but I can't make a determination the guy is racist based on that one quote in isolation. Classist, sure.

2. I dunno... the "people vote for you" thing kind of saves it for me
I think it was very awkwardly phrased, but I believe he meant "generic punks" in this instance.

I can't see him meaning "we expect young black men to cruise for toilet sex here at MSP airport."

7. Sounds kinda scripted.
I mean come on, cops these days are given mandatory sensitivity training to avoid just that kind of obvious crap, and if you've ever been arrested for anything, everybody from the cop in the car to the guy doing the fingerprints makes a point of being respectful, and if they are for ordinary joes, I'd guess they would be for a senator -- if this were for real, which it pretty obviously wasn't.

And no I've never been arrested for this or anything like it. :)

9. sensitivity training?
maybe for dealing with crime victims but...

when dealing with suspects or disorderly types that shit goes out the window.

"Keep your fucking hands on the car or Ill fucking shoot you."

I've never been arrested, either, but I've spent a lot of time with cops...

10. The Rethuglicans
thought they could use this in Craigs defense. Because if Craig is gay they could say "See he's a bigot" Picking on gay men. But since we all know that Senator Craig is NOT gay and NEVER has been gay well there goes that. Besides he had his (beard) wife right there so see that proves he's noy GAY.

11. Maybe DU should establish a group just for republican pervert apologists,
It seems no matter what inappropriate activity republicans get pinched for, there are always people on this website who will come to their defense from Foley to this freak WHO WAS LOOKING FOR SEX IN A PUBLIC WASHROOM.

I don't much care if the cop was Fred Phelps himself in a gestapo uniform - there is no reasonable defense of what the distingished senator from Idaho was up to.

And even if the defense of the misc republican perverts comes out of some sense of obligation to solidarity - remember, these guys would throw you guys under the bus.
