Silencing "Opus," again

Last week we told you that Salon was running two "Opus" cartoons, featuring spiritual seeker Lola Granola's stint as a "radical Islamist," that many newspapers, including the Washington Post, declined to publish. This week, Salon is running Berkeley Breathed's original, unedited version of the Lola Granola finale, and it's slightly different from the one approved for distribution to newspapers by the Washington Post Company.

In the strip distributed to newspapers, the final panel substitutes "world" for the term "Middle East." (The Washington Post declined to publish even the edited cartoon in the newspaper.) We liked it better the way Breathed originally drew it, and decided to run that version.

As I noted last week, Editor & Publisher and others reported that some newspapers had concerns about running a cartoon that might somehow be construed as insensitive to Muslims. I'd like to insert a line here about Salon's courage in running these two strips, but I didn't see anything that made me think twice about them -- except the news that others wouldn't publish them. We're proud to have Breathed as a contributor, and sad about what this episode says about newspaper publishing today.

1. Brilliant!!!
Too bad most of the country -- Democrats included -- have no idea what Breathed is talking about. Even so, the MSM know a dangerous idea when they see it. Hooray for censorship!! Dog Bless America!!!

3. Seattle Times ran it last Sunday;
We'll see which one they run tomorrow. Good grief, have you checked out www.ahiida.com in the lower right? That's just like the Christian swimwear sites that I've seen on DU.

4. It looks like Breathed mainly wanted to draw attention to that website.
And needed the previous comic to set it up. All this controversy for such an innocent payoff.

9. May God be glorified by the way we dress!
Edited on Sun Sep-02-07 06:42 AM by IanDB1

"You look tense. Let me give you a massage. You know, it would be easier if you took your top off..."

Growing up in a family of four daughters, modesty has always been a hot topic at our house! We desire to please the Lord in the way we dress and not be a stumbling block to others. We saw a great need especially, for modest swimwear. We didn't want to lower our standards just because we were swimming. Yet, we wanted a swimsuit that would be safe in the water and not clumsy.

We searched all over for something that we could wear, and tried all sorts of things! It just wasn't out there! I knew there were many others who were also searching for a modest solution for swimming.

<snip>

I knew there was a need out there for someone to provide a modest bathing suit pattern, and prayed about the possibility of marketing this pattern some day. When I graduated from home school high school, I was seeking the Lord's will about what I should be doing at this time in my life while I am single and at home. My Mom encouraged me to try marketing the pattern, and the Lord opened the doors and made it possible! Finally, it was ready, and we were very excited to make it available to others who are looking for an alternative.

It is my prayer that many people would be blessed by this pattern. May God be glorified by the way we dress!

12. Missed the point eh?
Not surprising that all some of you got from this is swim wear to make fun of. And in doing so, you fall closely along the same lines as those who try to dictate what the governments and cultures will be in other countries.

16. Meaning???
They still look good to me even if they do wear in the water than most of us do at the Mall. I thing they all would look good in bikinis, if they could be talked into it. My question is why are they ashamed of what their god made?

17. I meant that making fun of it is not the same as saying they don't have the right to do it.
France was wrong to try to ban the headscarf, but it would be just as wrong to ban people from commenting on it.

Notice there's no interest in making Christian guys wear "modest swimwear".

21. given the increase in skin cancers, here is my choice
not "modest" but it covers the skin... I want one, along with shorts for my legs, so I won't fry when I swim...

I don't want to have big chunks removed from my body to get rid of skin cancer, as a friend just did... I also don't want to die of malignant melanoma as another friend did 10 years ago (he was in his early 30s!)...

or perhaps this will do...

23. You can actually swim in those
the Christian and Muslim sites above have knee length skirts attached and are fairly baggy. I'd worry about all the extra water resistance and the possibility of those skirts catching on something while swimming (especially in the sea or lakes and rivers). In their zeal to make those suits "modest" they've made them less safe, imho.

24. Victorian swimdresses were dangerous, too
looks like they want to drag folks back to that era, but in spandex instead of cotton or wool... yes, ladies, swimming suits were sometimes made in wool- how would you like to be weighted down by this:

...and I keep wondering what kind of "modest" swimwear the guys are wearing... do they get to wear Speedos?
