Leahy To Bush: Info On Gonzo First - Then We Can Talk...
Senator Wants Gonzales Answers As Guide

September 2, 2007 02:30 PM EST |

WASHINGTON — Senate Judiciary Chairman Patrick Leahy said Sunday that finding out whether Attorney General Alberto Gonzales lied or otherwise misled Congress will help senators pick a worthy successor.

Leahy, D-Vt., has asked Justice Department Inspector General Glenn A. Fine to look into whether Gonzales gave inaccurate testimony about the firings of several U.S. attorneys last year.

"I am very pleased that it's being done, because I think that we should have the answers, and I have a great deal of confidence in the inspector general," Leahy said. "I have told the White House there's a lot of information we need to have before a confirmation hearing."

Leahy said that senators need to know what sort of advice Gonzales gave President Bush to help them ask whether the next prospective attorney general would be different.

I suspect this regime will either try to run some stealth toady or will be satisfied to go without an AG for the duration of asshat's "term". Leahy just tossed down the gauntlet as to the ground rules. Expect the Mighty Wurlitzer to crank up in days ahead how Leahy is holding things up...all as a smoke screen for this regime to avoid any accountability. They know any confirmation will be brutal...a reason Gonzo held on for as long as he has. This regime has gone months without a functional DOJ...and they don't mind that one bit...it keeps another set of investigators off their asses.

I also expect the Democrats to announce pro-forma sessions during future breaks. If not, we must make a lot of noise to demand them.

Cheers...

How can Congress find the best possible replacement for Gone-zales if they have no idea of what he was up to? How can his replacement possibly "drain the swamp" at DOJ if HE has no idea of what Gone-zales was up to? How can Bush possibly just say no? It's positively yummy!

:P

8. Nobody can get in without the Dem's
This will be very interesting to observe knowing that nothing can happen without the democrats support. The smartest thing the Dem's can do is not let anyone in and preserve the crime scene as gonzo left it.

10. Just so you know, Leahy supports defunding the war
And he's done a lot more than talk. He's held tough hearings that demanded truth and accountability, and even if he didn't get that, he's a major reason that Gonzo is gone.

And it's not a matter of "milking" Gonzo; the WH used the DoJ for their own political purposes. We should continue going after Gonzo.
