Advisers: Craig decided not to seek re-election before scandal broke

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Sen. Larry Craig had already decided not to seek re-election before revelations that he pleaded guilty to charges stemming from a Minnesota sex sting, two of the Idaho Republican's political advisers claimed Thursday.

Sen. Larry Craig, R-Idaho, on Saturday announced his intent to resign in Boise, Idaho.

Before news of his arrest became public last month, Craig told his former chief of staff and long time confidante Gregory Casey that he was not going to run for re-election in 2008, Casey told CNN.

"He and Suzanne had decided that he had been in Congress long enough, and it was time for him to go home," Casey said, referring to Craig's wife.

In a separate interview, Craig spokesman Dan Whiting also confirmed to CNN that Craig had already decided not to run for re-election, and originally planned to announce that publicly in September.

1. Suuuuuuuuure he did
So we are to believe that he flashes a US Senate card to a cop but he really doesn't want that title anymore. THEN he quits but no maybe not turns out he gets big focus group points by taking on the media no not really turns out he has been voted off the island by his own people and NOW turns out that he didn't want to be Senator anymore anyway.

Uh-huh

3. former chief of staff and "long time confidante " ?????
Sorry, but the only way I've seen that phrase used is as code for a very intimate relationship. As in Camilla was always presented as Charles' "long time confidante" -- even after Diana let the cat out of the bag.

I'm betting it was.

6. What effect does resigning on the last day of the government's fiscal year (09/30) have on his
pension? Follow the money. And if he can manage to hang on for another year? Follow the money.

As long as he decided: "If I get busted, I won't run for re-election." In that case, sure, he "decided" not to run (conditionally, of course - which seems to be his M.O.).

Edit: Syntax.
