Dean described the 11 Commandments of the Democratic Party..
at the National Baptist Convention today in Ohio. The blog says he never described the moral and political code as Commandments, but they had the sound of a party's credo.

From the Daily Bellwether

Here's the Law, according to Howard, who said, "We know what moral issues are about . . . As Democrats we believe:

1. That no child should go to bed hungry.

2. As Democrats we believe that it is a moral issue that we no longer be the last industrialized country on the face of the Earth that doesn't have health care for every single person. And we have acted on that in Congress by giving every child under 18 health insurance.

3. That war should be a last resort only after diplomacy has been exhausted.

4. That we should properly equip our troops before we send them to war.

5. That we should properly take care of our veterans when they come home.

6. That everyone deserves equal rights under the law.

7. That we should be good stewards of the Earth.

8. That hardworking people should earn a living wage and be able to take care of their families.

9. That we shouldn't pass debt onto our children and our grandchildren.

10. That faith should not be used to divide people.

11. That you and I have more in common than we have differences.

Beautifully said, and words for any party to live by.

4. That's a great list
The republicans have an abysmal record on these crucial issues, and Democrats shoud capitalize on that.

7. Four Freedoms ...
In a State of the Union Address on January 6, 1941, also known as the Four Freedoms speech, Roosevelt enumerated four points as fundamental freedoms humans "everywhere in the world" ought to enjoy:

1. Freedom of speech and expression
2. Freedom of every person to worship in his own way
3. Freedom from hunger
4. Freedom from fear

He so gets it.

Perhaps that should be the first Commandment?

9. Ahhh... the Great Doctor Dean. WHY do they persecute him so?
WHY do party operatives want to give him such a hard time???

I don't get it. He's OUR way forward. He's the way out of this mess.

15. How's he doing on #6 lately?
There are many ways out of the many messes we're in. While Dean talks a great game otherwise, I find it hard to have faith in a man who opposes same-sex marriage.

10. I have an ancient faded homemade tee shirt that reads
We All Have More In Common Than That Which Separates Us.

It's a great thing to remember. Glad that Dean has a similar sentiment included in his commandments.

12. And this is official party policy? You wish.
I checked the charter and bylaws of the DP, as published by the DNC but could not find any reference to these or any other Democratic political moral guidelines.

Yes, these are impressive words, but I don't see too many representatives of this church practicing the preachings of its chairman. So what value do these "commandments" hold? Can we expect Democratic leaders to uphold them? Can we hold Democratic politicians accountable if they do not act by them?

I would love to believe that these are the values of the Democratic Party, but the sad fact is that unless our leadership (and that IS Dr. Dean) acts on them, they are not written in stone like the other commandments that are often lauded but rarely followed. They are written in bullshit.

17. Johnathan Alter said something interesting about the Dems last noght on KO...
...basically to the effect that the elected Dems were going to feel some heat from their own base if they don't get off their asses and start acting like Dems...and stop supporting the reich-wing agenda they've been cowed into making us swallow...

26. I saw Alter the other day slamming his own profession for how they did Gore
I had to write and thank him. He trashed the media in giving a Bush a free pass and how they set out to character assasinate Gore and twisted everything he said.

29. I would prefer Dean, Clark, or esp. Gore
to any of those running.

I'd like to believe it's a clever strategy to spare the ultimate candidate as long as possible from the vicissitudes of R-wing political assassination; but for years now, I've seen nothing from the Dems to indicate they're smart enough to have actually planned such a thing.

(E.g., much as I love Gore, I was horrified to learn from the recent Atlantic article how he and his staff had apparently failed to grasp the imperative of sucking up to the press. I mean, do these guys live in terrariums or what.)
