Is it me or was Ronald Reagan most overrated politican in history
Edited on Fri Sep-07-07 08:38 AM by Hawaii Hiker
Please read the attached article it is fascinating...I read it twice, & I totally argee with the writer....

The writer didn't even mention why I always thought low of Reagan, he appointed Scalia, tried to appoint Bork, & wasted tremendous amount of money on the Meese Commission, which investiagted the porn industry....

To me, that airport in Washington DC will always be Washington National Airport, I refuse to call it by its other name...

6. YES!
He would have perhaps been great, if he would have been elected the nation's grandfather (good folksy stories, great communicator, somewhat funny and knew what to project for the situation). He was in my opinion the worst president we had ever had up until the Esteemed Mr. Bush.

7. Would you be happier if Reagan had been more like Napoleon?
A commander in chief who has the military talent and the motivation can impose his will on various countries and fight many opportunistic wars before he finally over-extends himself and forces his country to surrender to the coalition of enemies it has created for itself.

Which is safer for the world: a military career followed by a political career or an acting career followed by a political career?

of except that both are/were generals. I did use the word "can", not the word "will" in this: "can impose his will on various countries and fight many opportunistic wars."

Someone with the talents of a Napoleon might have the power to do something like what Napoleon did. Not all powers are used.

Of course many historians would tell you that the Soviet union fell because of the Soviet Union and not because of Saint Ronnie the Senile...but that's not how the FReeps see it. Probably because they're idiots.

That fucker set in motion many of our most serious problems today (deregulation, empowering Christian fundamentalists, neocons and corporations at the expense of the majority of us, horrific secret government ops - Iran/Contra, Abu Gharaib, Guantanamo, etc.), and his mind rotted away before he could be held accountable for his crimes. Instead, his death was treated as that of a Moonie Pope and conservative Messiah.

51. I saw VERY different coverage of the funeral
in Europe. The news show I was watching on the day of the funeral showed the the "throng" on CNN was really just a very small group of people on bleachers watching the motorcade with the hearse. And they actually commented on how the processionand funeral were being staged, how the event had been planned for years. Yes, years. The reporter said something about the Reagans being theatrical to the end.

Reagan's appeal always baffled me. I remember around 1982 or '83, one of my co-workers saying (with a sigh in her voice) that she felt "so safe" with Reagan in office. Since she was above me in the chain of command, I chose not to respond.

And the airport? It's either DCA or National. The only person I know who calls is Reagan claims to be an independent, yet always votes Republican.

When you have a B-rated actor become the President of the United States, you know you have a big problem in more ways than one.

In fact, that sets the stage for some village idiot to come in and play the fool who makes fools feel good about their condition ... oh, wait, that's become a fact. Sorry.

He was one of our worst presidents, but 20 years of non-stop propaganda by the right wing has convinced alot of people that he was one of our best. Reagan was quite unpopular when he left the White House. I remember laughing the first time I heard some right-wing stooge remark on the "greatness of Ronald Reagan". I didn't realize it was part of a larger marketing campaign.

Reagan's "teflon", remember that.

Well, it wasn't teflon, after all, but the Dry Run Test of the Prototype Bushevik Sub-Media and Lie Laundry.

Remember how Ollie North had a "95% approval rating"? Knowing what we now know about the Bushie Infrastructure of Lies and it's wild successess over the same gullibility, apparently, that was present in 1930s Germany and exists today in Amerika 2007... Knowing what we know, do you STILL believe Ollie had a 95% approval rating?

I expect the same Orwellian Bushification of Bushler's legacy, only worse because whatever Reagan was, he sure as hell wasn't the worst pResident in American History, like Bushler is.

Yes the propaganda and PR lies used to sell Reagan to a gullbile populace ready to be (and now are) enslaved were the primitive prototypes of those which work swo well today.

I never did get what all the adulation was about. I didn't think he was the "Great Communicator", just a corny man wishing he still lived in another era. I believe he was a puppet to G.H.W. Bush, James Baker and that whole crew. They are the ones who ran the country into ruination. They just propped him in front of a camera and let him ramble on and the press and people loved it. What a sham!!

One of the best, as was Bill Clinton.

But Reagan was an awful president. Incredibly overrated. He is responsible for much of today's energy and environmental problems. He's given credit for ending the Cold War where much of the credit should go to Gorbachev. Reagan also started us on the credit binge that is finally coming home to roost. Trickle-down economics and all that.

The fact that he is so revered is an indication of his top-notch political (and acting) skills.

Reagan was far from a great president. Infact he was among the worst for what would have been the best interests of most of the citiznes of this country...he just had great publicity.

The Man Behind the Magic

By Lou Cannon
Monday, August 20, 2007; Page A15

Michael Deaver will be remembered as Ronald Reagan's magic man, the impresario who orchestrated presidential performances, ordered up the backdrops (usually blue) and carefully staged historical remembrances such as the splendid observance of the D-Day anniversary on the beaches of Normandy in 1984. All of that is well and good, but Deaver's importance transcended stagecraft.

64. National Airport--now and forever !!
I was born a few miles from that airport and have flown in and out
of it hundreds of times. It will never have another name for me, and
for those who are from the DC area, the same goes for most of them.

As for Reagan, I don't overrate him at all. I saw him as a big zero
before he took office, while he was in office, and after he was in
office. He was a figment of the imagination of a small group of very
clever evil people. Some saw what they were supposed to see. For the
rest of us, he was not a figment of our imagination, but instead, one
eight year long nightmare, much like the sequel in which we are all
now starring in supporting roles.

65. Abso-friggen-lutely
The fact that man gets credit for "winning" the Cold War is an enormous insult to each and every Eastern European who put his or her life on the line to advocate for democratic change in the 1970s and 1980s.

And the fact that Americans voted in a B-movie actor over one of the most intelligent, ethical and compassionate men to ever hold the office of the presidency is embarassing.

Here's the thing about Reagan--Republicans and conservatives idolize him not for anything he actually did, but because they were so embarassed after Watergate they needed to create a new Republican "hero" to wipe the slate clean. Who better to do it than the biggest empty suit ever to hold the office?
