So thompson is going to be the next reagan
as is the story being tossed about. Will that mean he will lose his hearing, drift into dementia and develop an abiding hate of priests, nuns and children in Central America? I can see why such a man would be loved by life supporting christian conservative republicans.

5. 'Scuse me, but not even Reagan was the "next Reagan . . ."
Edited on Fri Sep-07-07 09:10 AM by MrModerate
He was elevated to sainthood post-presidency and pre-dementia. During his administration, opposition to him was strong and loud and on the whole his deficits outweighed his assets -- literally.

By comparison with everyone who's followed him (with the possible exception of Clinton), he was a really good speaker. And that's about it.

Reagan was a "B" list actor; Thompson's a "C" lister. He'll probably speak better than most of the candidates (Dem and 'Lican), but it'll be tissue-thin. Thompson's going to fizzle, sooner rather than later, I think.

11. Only 200 people showed up at an event he had yesterday
That's not so good..

I think Rudy & Mittens will chop him up ..and his Little Mermaid does not seem to get along with his staffers,so watch for her to be drilling little holes into the hull of the boat..

8. On the plus side, Jeri wouldn't be as annoying as Nancy unless...
you happen to be on Thompson's staff. Then you would have to quit.

Makes no difference. She is not going to be First Lady, as she's put her saddle on the wrong horse. (I think that's what Reagan would have said.)

9. Remember that Fred Thompson was the guy
that alerted Nixon that they were going to get his White House audio tapes. After meeting with Fred, Dick erased some 9 minutes or so. Thanks to Fred, we will never know the depths of Nixon's depravity.

10. Frankly, and perhaps unpopularly, I'll say that Thompson is too smart and decent to be Reagan.
Not that I think he's Einstein or that he's a swell guy. But he does have a level of thought beyond what he reads on the teleprompter, and though his record as senator isn't the stuff that legends are made of, he was competent as a senator. And listening to some of his comments and reading between the lines on some of his votes, I believe he understood the difference between saying what his constituency wanted and doing what the country needed. His voting record wasn't good, mind you, but he seemed at least to care what he was voting for.

Reagan was an exceptionally bad president. His PR firm has done a number on the nation, making people forget that he was an extreme racist and mysoginist who kicked off his campaign showing solidarity with civil rights murderers in Philadelphia, Mississippi, and who sold weapons to nations that had declared war on us, funded terrorists who slaughtered American priests and nuns (I'll leave off the rumors of drug smuggling and bargaining with American lives to gain political advantages), cheated during his debates, ran up the largest deficit in human history, and was only able to be considered anything other than a total disaster because of the actions of his to successors--Bush, who pardoned the witnesses who could have had Reagan convicted of treason, and Clinton, whose economic policies saved the economy and reduced the deficit enough to turn us back from the brink of economic devestation.

I firmly believe that as bad as Thompson would be for this nation, he would be better than Reagan. Or Bush. He would lead us more slowly down the path of ruin, rather then driving us as quickly as possible towards the nearest cliff.

I'm stil hoping for another Clinton to save this nation, whether that Clinton is named Clinton or not. :)

12. smart and decent?
He has been thrashed as being a LAZY senator. He then spent nearly 20 years as a lobbyist for some of the most slimy corporations. Instead of going to a debate where he could show his 'smarts' he went to Jay Leno to declare, "I wanna be president"- wow how eloquent. Thompson was/is a disciple of Nixon.
Thompson is a very bad man. Please do not let yourself think that he would be ok. I'm not even going to touch the "Clinton to save us" comment.

13. Unless we get a Clinton/Obama ticket, Thompson will beat us
Giuliani would be close, but without the big guns of Clinton AND Obama, Thompson will bury us. He would make Edwards look like a naughty child. That deep, rich, comforting, no nonsense voice.... mark my words... it would be the dark years of Reagan all over again.

16. Well reagan was a half ass mediocre actor
and Baby Huey seems to be the same. I guess that is enough of a similarity for the republicans to declare them both the same.

17. Ole Fred is without a doubt
my least favorite DA on Law and Order and that has nothing to do with his politics. The other actors just did a far superior job.
