Should I be wearing a tinfoil hat? Fallout Studies in Huntsville, Al

While nukes were flying over the US this was also going on. Here in Huntsville, we worry more about tornadoes than nukes but this has me paranoid. :tinfoilhat: :scared:

Huntsville EMA officials to brief congressman on nuclear fallout preparedness
Posted by Staff reports September 06, 2007 12:10 PM

Two Huntsville emergency management officials will brief a member of Congress Tuesday on the city's preparedness for nuclear fallout, according to a news release from the city.

John "Rusty" Russell, director of Huntsville/Madison County Emergency Management Agency, and Kirk Paradise, emergency plans coordinator for the EMA, will meet with U.S. Rep. Charles Dent, R-Pennsylvania. Dent, a member of the House Committee on Homeland Security, requested the meeting.

1. Fallout preparedness?
Did I go into some kind of time warp and wake up in 1958?

5. phhht
They stopped building public fall-out shelters a long time ago. No one is prepared, except maybe DC and Rochestor MN.

7. "revitalization of the fallout shelter program"??
:scared:

<snip>

The briefing will highlight Huntsville's revitalization of its fallout shelter system, the training of responders on radiological safety, its use of radiological monitoring and detection equipment, including using government vehicles equipped with detection devices.

Paradise recently presented details of the community's fallout shelter revitalization at a national symposium and had articles published in several trade journals focused on homeland security, nuclear/radiological situations and the revitalization of the fallout shelter program.

8. My guess is this is more DHS crap re: dirty bombs
Not that they'd bother to check incoming container ships or airplane cargo...just get everyone nice and scared.

9. Huntsville, Al has a large military base...
A large portion of the population here does some sort of defense work including missile defense. Browns Ferry Nuclear plant (which * recently visited)is about 25 miles to the west of us. :fear:

10. I remember reading a couple of years ago,
that the next terrorist attack would happen in Mobil Alabama, i don't remember where i read that, it seemed far fetched at the time.

But Huntsville would have nuke fallout, if something happened in Mobil. I can't point to the story i read, i didn't bookmark it.

Peace Please!

11. The biggest danger was fallout of a different nature:
If one of those warheads fell out of the plane and landed on you, you would be quite dead. Not from a nuclear blast, but from the impact.

In this case, if someone yells, "Duck and cover!", you should. But there will be no flash.
