At the Senate Armed Services hearing on progress in Iraq today, Sen. John Warner (R-VA) asked Gen. David Petraeus, the top commander in Iraq, “if we continue what you have laid before the Congress, this strategy, that if you continue, you are making America safer?” “Sir, I don’t know actually,” replied Petraeus, adding that he is solely focused on the mission in Iraq. WARNER: I hope in the recesses of your heart that you know that strategy will continue the casualties, stress on our forces, stress on military families, stress on all Americans. Are you able to say at this time, if we continue what you have laid before the Congress, this strategy, that if you continue, you are making America safer?

PETRAEUS: Sir, I believe that this is indeed the best course of action to achieve our objections in Iraq.

WARNER: Does that make America safer?

PETRAEUS: Sir, I don’t know actually. I have not sat down and sorted out in my own mind. What I have focused on and been riveted on is how to accomplish the mission of the Multinational Force in Iraq.

The country or your f'n mission? Which mission is a priori, protect and defend the constitution or the friggin cinc?

... but it doesn't seem to me that he should be on the hook for *this* issue.

This is the talking point we MUST emphasize to sum up these hearings.

Forget about squishy stats. Forget about the benchmarks. Forget about everything else.

Turn their talking point against them - Petraeus doesn't know if fighting the terrorists there means they won't be fighting us here (gag). He doesn't know if we are safer cause of his stategy. Use the fear mongering of the Rethugs against them and make sure the American people understand that even Petraeus doesn't buy it.
