Reid: "Ted Olson Will Not Be Confirmed"
By Paul Kiel - September 12, 2007, 4:04 PM

How much opposition would Ted Olson get if nominated? Well, consider the gauntlet thrown down:

Senate Democrats will block Ted Olson from succeeding Alberto Gonzales as attorney general if President Bush nominates him, Majority Leader Harry Reid said Wednesday.

"Ted Olson will not be confirmed," Reid, D-Nev., said in a written statement. "I intend to do everything I can to prevent him from being confirmed as the next attorney general."

48. Anyone else remember that picture of Olson holding hands with .....
a woman about 3-4 weeks after his wife was zapped on 9-11-01?

That needs to resurface so if they push the sympathy deal.... he may wish to explain how long he knew the woman in the picture...........

Can you really see any of these folks voting for him to go to the floor?

Patrick Leahy Chairman, Vermont
Edward Kennedy, Massachusetts
Joseph Biden, Delaware
Herb Kohl, Wisconsin
Dianne Feinstein, California
Russ Feingold, Wisconsin
Chuck Schumer, New York
Richard Durbin, Illinois
Benjamin Cardin, Maryland
Sheldon Whitehouse, Rhode Island

In fact, i doubt he'll even get a committee hearing.

Nelson of NE was the only dem who's still in the Senate who voted FOR Olsen, and I believe there was one other. It was a squeaker of a vote. He was barely confirmed. You're right about Clinton, but other than that you couldn't be more wrong.

46. Not by abandoning troops in the field
They never said they'd do that. Only a small percentage of the population even support defunding. Democrats ran on Murtha's over the horizon disengagement. The second the Democrats won, Republicans started challenging them to stop funding. And, as usual, the far left took the bait and are helping distract from the real method of ending the war - peeling away those ten Republican senators I listed earlier.

16. Olson was Solicitor General, also AAG in charge of OLC at DoJ, ALSO ran the Arkansas Project

Probably not a concern, because it won't happen. However, there may be an attempt to derail investigations by creating a false fight.
The big chain hanging around Olson's neck is the illegal activities of the Arkansas Project. SEE:

The Cunningham case spurred the ongoing probe of Lewis and his use of earmarks in connection with lobbyists and contractors.

The U.S. Attorney, the G.O.P. Congressman and the Timely Job Offer

There is yet another United States attorney whose abrupt departure from office is raising questions: Debra Wong Yang of Los Angeles. Ms. Yang was not fired, as eight other prosecutors were, but she resigned under circumstances that raise serious questions, starting with whether she was pushed out to disrupt her investigation of one of the most powerful Republicans in Congress.

... the riskiest job in the Bush administration is being a prosecutor investigating a Republican member of Congress. Carol Lam, the United States attorney in San Diego, was fired after she put Randy Cunningham, known as Duke, in prison. Paul Charlton, in Arizona, was dismissed while he was investigating Rick Renzi. Dan Bogden, in Nevada, was fired while he was reportedly investigating Jim Gibbons, a congressman who was elected governor last year.

....

Ms. Yang says she left for personal reasons, but there is growing evidence that the White House was intent on removing her. Kyle Sampson, the Justice Department staff member in charge of the firings, told investigators last month in still-secret testimony that Harriet Miers, .......

The new job that Ms. Yang landed raised more red flags. Press reports say she got a $1.5 million signing bonus to become a partner in Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, a firm with strong Republican ties. She was hired to be co-leader of the Crisis Management Practice Group with Theodore Olson, who was President Bush’s solicitor general and his Supreme Court lawyer in Bush v. Gore. Gibson, Dunn was defending Mr. Lewis in Ms. Yang’s investigation.

Yang denies departure is linked to that of other U.S. attorneys
By Susan Crabtree - March 05, 2007
http://thehill.com/leading-the-news/yang-denies-departure-is-linked-to-that-of-other-u.s.-attorneys-2007-03-05.html

A former U.S. attorney for Los Angeles, Debra Wong Yang, dismissed questions about the timing of her departure....

Wong Yang was heading up the investigation into Rep. Jerry Lewis’s (R-Calif.) ties to a lobbying firm and the millions of dollars in contracts the firm’s clients received from Congress. Wong Yang, the first Asian-American woman to serve as a U.S. attorney, left her post with Justice to become a partner at Gibson, Dunn and Crutcher, the law firm representing Lewis. She will co-chair the firm’s crisis-management practice group, along with Washington, D.C., partner Theodore B. Olson, a former Bush administration solicitor general.

Wong Yang said her departure was a personal decision based on financial concerns and the fact that she is a single mother, and had nothing to do with the firings of other U.S. attorneys. She also said her departure would not affect the case against Lewis in any way, ...........

-----------------

Yang will co-chair the firm’s crisis-management practice group.... Former Assistant U.S. Attorney Douglas Fuchs, Yang’s colleague at the Los Angeles U.S. attorney’s office, also has joined her at Gibson, Dunn and Crutcher. Yang and Fuchs have recused themselves from working on Lewis’s defense.

Fuchs did not respond to The Hill’s queries. ....

47. Tacky and tasteless.
Olsen's a bad character and would be a disaster as Attorney General--imagine a Gonzales with a brain. The suggestion that the Olsen or anyone in this administration had anything to do with 9/11 has been thoroughly debunked... by New Orleans, Iraq, Afghanistan, the budget, the housing bubble, and of course the current spate of Justice Department scandals.

114. Okay...here ya go...spit, spit, spit:
There’ll be no recess appointments this time around, Roll Call reports (sub. req.), meaning the White House won’t be taking advantage of Congress’ vacation to install any contested nominees. That’s due to a deal between Bush and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV). . . . Last recess, the White House made a number of controversial recess appointments, including Swift Boat backer Sam Fox as ambassador to Belgium. In order to prevent that sort of thing from happening again, Reid had plotted to keep the Senate in “pro forma” session during the recess — whereby the Senate floor personnel show up every three days to make it an official session. But now Reid and Bush have made a deal, according to Roll Call. Bush won’t make any recess appointments and Reid has promised to move some of his nominees when Senate gets back in session.

71. Maybe Reid will hold his quickie pro forma sessions like he planned to do over the August break?
We hear that over the long August vacation, when those types of summer hires are made, Reid will call the Senate into session just long enough to force the prez to send his nominees who need confirmation to the chamber. The talk is he will hold a quickie “pro forma” session every 10 days, tapping a local senator to run the hall. Senate workers and Republicans are miffed, but Reid is proving that he’s the new sheriff in town.

70. Hey now.
The only reason Ted Olson isn't AG already is because Reid forced the President to agree to make no recess appointments whatsoever during the August break.

Then Gonzo went ahead and bailed out during the recess, giving the most criminally corrupt President in our nation's history the one chance he'd likely ever have to appoint an equally criminal successor to Alberto Gonzales. All Bush had to do was break his promise to Reid.

And Bush didn't have the balls to do it.

That was all Harry Reid's doing, and you had better fucking know it.

88. It doesn't matter. This isn't up to them.
It's up to Pat Leahy and perhaps the rest of the dems on the Committee, if, and it's a big if, Leahy allows such a nomination to come up for a hearing. He's in charge of scheduling it,and he reiterated yesterday; no requested/subpoenaed material, no hearing. And all the dems on the committee would vote against Olsen.

Frankly, I think this is a decoy. Someone/something else is in the bushco works.

104. Hearings are an opportunity ...

Given this man's past, hearings are a great opportunity. They should definitely have them and get to the bottom of who Ted Olsen really is. Then they just vote down the nomination in committee and Bush will get the idea that he is going to have to nominate a serious prosecutor intent on enforcing laws while upholding the constitution instead of a rabid right wing attack.

Like this gem:
"Hopefully, at some point, people will at least credit the Republicans with carrying out their oversight responsibilities and with pursuing a principled course of action even in the face of everyone's short-attention spans. "

or this:
"In the mind of Bill Clinton, political considerations outweigh even life-and-death matters of great concern to his own law-enforcement officials, not to mention the nation.
"

...
"From what we've heard about George W., he has a lot issues that he wants to run on. They're positive. They're good. He thinks he's got a good vision for America."

http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/authors/b/barbara_olson.html

Her whole life revolved around her obsession with Bill Clinton.

She was Ted Olson's third wife, BTW, another republican, "family values," hypocrite.

119. I'd love to see it start with Patrick Leahy, telling the White House
"we'll move on ted olsen when YOU cough up all the papers, emails, staffers, and FORMER staffers who you're willfully withholding. You don't give us these things? Then you can forget about nominating ANYBODY for Attorney General. Make him do a recess appointment. Just gives us yet another talking point.

I SO ARDENTLY BELIEVE that if the Dems started showing some real BACKBONE, it would woo wavering everybodies. It would remove all naysayers' doubts about the Dems having any spine. They have VERY good reason to keep thinking that, though, because so far the Dems have not shown any. And it's a worthy question to ask: if the Dems can't stand up to bush and the republi-CONS, how do we know they can stand up to bin Laden? I think that's all they'd have to do to start moving the numbers toward our side, in droves. Just. Show. Some. GUTS.
