Talk of it is just another dodgy pipe-dream.
People who have gut-level..soul-level grievances will never live together in a fully peaceful manner.
A tyrant can subdue those violent tendencies, and can even forge alliances at family levels, through work and marriage, but when they tyrant falls, all bets are off.
When a third party (that would be US) interferes and stirs the pot as we have done, things only get worse. In the frenzy to try and kill us, they have also turned on each other. Complete chaos is the perfect time to "even old scores".
When almost every family has lost loved ones, homes, businesses, futures, and even pasts..there will be no reconciliation. An edgy truce is about all one can hope for..and that's only as long-lasting as whatever "peace" comes out of the tumult.
Oil, and its profits will always be that rock in the sandal, though, and no real peace will ever come to pass in Iraq. Non one will ever feel as if their particular group is being treated fairly, and outsiders will probably be meddling in Iraq forever.
Many people were astonished when Yugoslavia catapulted itself onto its sword when Tito died, and the iron curtain melted away.. Yugoslavia was a very forward country, and had a very westernized outlook, and look what happened to it.. How could ANYONE have predicted less for a country like Iraq..Bogus in its very creation, and held together by a brutal dictator whom WE supported off an on. We were the LAST people on earth who would have any credibility in the re-creation of Iraq..
That said, we DID have a very small window of opportunity, but we blew that window to smithereens and then bulldozed it under..
When we breezed into Iraq with little or no resistance, we had an opportunity to enlist the Iraqi people in a massive rebuilding of their own country.. they had engineers, doctors, teachers, plumbers, electricians, farmers..every occupation one could imagine..
The jobs that had once been handed out by Saddam, would have been available to everyone..there could have been a Renaissance...but we chose to take them back to the Dark Ages.
Every male from 15-55 should have been given a JOB..even if it was sweeping up .. they could have been paid $1k a month (far cheaper than this war) and they could have been provided with the raw materials needed for rebuilding their country..
Idle hands are the devil's workshop, and families used to having little or nothing, could have found themselves with 3 or 4 or more family members earning large (for them) sums of money..
Local businesses would have sprung up, and life could have become "normal" again.
By denying them jobs and meaningful work, we reignited a hatred in them that spilled buckets of blood..everyone's blood.
Now we have millions of people who have left Iraq (that's a prime reason that violence seems lessened), created hardships for all of Iraq's neighbors who have reluctantly taken these people in, and we have the hard core no-good-niks left behind..
Total failure to plan.. Total failure to execute..Total failure all 'round.
