What the f*** does this notice from AT&T mean?
I mean besides the obvious eternal fact that they intend to screw me in some way or other? Which way do they intend?

I got this postcard in the mail from AT&T. Here is the complete text of it:

OFFICIAL NOTIFICATION
You may contact AT&T to confirm your Outside City Limits (OCL) designation (outside the city or municipal limits of the city or municipality listed as part of your address) and/or speak to an AT&T representative concerning your OCL status by calling 1 800 453-9320. If you indicate to AT&T that you reside outside the city or municipal limits of the city or municipality listed as part of your address, AT&T will follow that indication, unless overridden by the revelant (sic) taxing authority.

Affected states: (list of 28 states, which appear to me to be rather random--big, small, north, south, east, west, central, red, blue, progressive, regressive, etc.)

1. I would think ...

that if you tell them you live within the city limits then AT&T would apply whatever city taxes to your bill that could be assessed. If you tell them you are outside the city limits then they would not. Mine is like that.

2. No city taxes and you can select a carrier of your choice
In the community we live in we didn't have a choice on the phone service because the phone company claimed to be a small business. Just happens they have customers in 36 states but they get to claim small business therefore have a monopoly on service in the area.

We went with Vonage just to keep from paying all their fees.

3. AT&T has been restructured again. I have a small past due bill that is not affected by
my payments to the 'new' AT&T, apparently. They have been separated. I've been getting calls that my current payments don't offset my balance prior to reorganization.

4. Hey, you gotta watch out for those "revelant taxing authorities." Christ, can't AT&T afford
a spell-checker program?

Other than this pointless comment, I have NO idea how to help you decipher that "official notification," which may indeed be the single most meaningless and obscure paragraph that I have EVER tried to read.

7. Probably the result of the OCL class action lawsuit
I got the same postcard and, like you, assumed that it was not to my benefit.

However, it appears that this is the result of a lawsuit brought against AT&T (long distance) over incorrectly billing customers a city tax.

Check out http://www.oclsettlement.com for a list of cash and prizes you are entitled to.

It would have been nice if they had put a URL on the postcard to provide more information. You could call the 800 number on the card, I suppose. But then, that may give them the right to have telemarketers call you with money-saving offers for your long distance service.

This is the closest thing I could find on their site: http://www.corp.att.com/attsettle/

11. Aha! That makes sense.
The second link that you gave seems to be about some directory assistance issue. I think the first link is the one that applies.

Welcome to DU!

12. Interesting observation.
Not very surprising but certainly ironic.
