34. I doubt that Al will endorse
any of the candidates any time soon. Nobody is making the environment central enough to their campaigns at this time. My feeling is that he will wait for the general election battle to start, and support whom ever gets the Democratic nomination in what ever capacity the nominee wishes.

I wish I was not talking about endorsements that Al may give; I wish I was able to talk about the great campaign Al was running. The clock has pretty much run out that hope. Even Al Gore needs to raise money and get his message out in the early primary states.

12. From Wikepedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nobel_prize
The committees and institutions serving as selection boards for the Prizes typically announce the names of the laureates in October. The Prizes are then awarded at formal ceremonies held annually on December 10, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel's death. The Nobel Banquet is the banquet that is held every year in Stockholm City Hall in connection with the Nobel Prize.

before the general election. I have no candidate unless Gore decides to run. In the general election, I'll support whomever the Dems give us, but until then, it's Gore or nobody.I'm sort of fond of Kucinich, but I don't think the powers that be will ever nominate him. So while I wait for Gore, I'm keeping my wallet tight shut.

to see of Gore gets into the race. If he does not declare his candidacy after, and if, he gets the Nobel Prize, then I am left without a candidate. I also like Kucinich, but the vast unwashed will never vote for him. So, no Gore, I go into the voting booth not really giving a shit, esp if I have to vote for Clinton.

27. if he doesn't run, he will hugely disappoint me . . .
Al Gore knows better than anyone what's at stake, because he's spent years studying global warming and the environment . . . he also knows that no other candidate will place the environment at the very top of the agenda, where it belongs, and take the necessary steps to curtail the corporate and government excess that is killing the planet . . . if he doesn't find the situation compelling enough to run, my opinion of Mr. Gore will decrease significantly . . .

36. Simply and beautifully put! knr
I have been consoling myself in these dark days with these two amazing speeches-

Fmr. Vice Pres. Gore Speech on Executive Powers
The American Constitution Society and the Liberty Coalition host a speech by Fmr. Vice Pres. Al Gore at the DAR Hall in Washington. Gore speaks about the limits of executive power, the issue of monitoring domestic communications and the authorization of the use of torture in the war against terrorism.

Fmr. Vice Pres. Al Gore Speech on Bush Presidency
Former Vice Pres. Al Gore delivers his final major policy speech of the campaign season. Mr. Gore critiques Pres. Bush's presidency in many areas, specifically Iraq, jobs retention and creation, the environment and people's trust in government.

38. The fact that this one word thread made the front page...
Illustrates perfectly why good men like Al Gore don't wish to run in this toxic system. If this thread were about his work with The Alliance for Climate Protection or the progress he is making and others are making in spreading this truth to India, South America, Australia, Asia, and as I have read will be coming, Africa through The Climate Project to educate and inspire others to spark that global moral awareness that will bring a political and social tipping point, it would never see the light of day here.

This thread then proves that those who continually do nothing but beg and cheerlead simply for their own selfish political reasons over the moral imperative we now face don't really care about the important work he is now doing as a statesman, environmental ambassador, and spokesman to the world on a crisis that goes so beyond one word sound bite pleas. They want what they want and nothing he says or does or feels is right for him to do now even after serving in that toxic beltway for thirty years is going to stop them from stomping their feet...Unless of course it is really fighting to end the regime of Bush who has sat here for seven years while we all played tiddly winks. Now all of a sudden when they don't like the choices that seven years wrought by our own lack of participation in changing anything they try to push Al Gore into something he obviously has reservations about doing now because he knows the political score better than they do...

OH, but wait... They know more than he does about his own future and where he should be, even though there is never any proof to back up why it would be better from that snake pit that ignored his words on the climate crisis for all of those years thus bringing us to this point... just as long as it gives them the knock down drag out political fight they need and want to keep things interesting on the blogs and on the cable networks, global warming be damned because after all this is only a "temporary diversion" for Mr. Gore and if he doesn't run NOW he will be a "has been." Yeah, right.

Hopefully he was correct when he stated that he is averse to the bogus polls and temptations being put in his path simply because some people are using him for their own agendas. As far as I am concerned, there is nothing more important now than averting a planetary catastrophe that will forever effect our relationship with her. Threads like this just prove how simplistic this all is to some and reiterate Mr. Gore's words that this country is not at the critical mass yet that needs to be reached before a political tipping point will come. So I say, "Follow your heart, Al, Follow your heart" and thank you for seeing the big picture and never taking your eye off the real prize.

How sad to see that people in Europe and other countries see that prize clearer and appreciate his work so much more than his own people on the whole do.

 Well, some of us in this country do see it, and do appreciate it, and will help him now, and don't need to constantly push ultimatums in his face because we trust his judgement and don't find his work unworthy without the hype attached to it. So thank you Mr. Gore for being a man in this world who is standing up for Earth to call on us to do the right thing before it is too late. To me there is no greater man than he who would do so regardless of his address.

41. Run, Al Run...
is a plea, not an ultimatum.

I'm sure he will follow his heart.

The country needs a leader that will address this crisis head on. He himself has admitted to the presidency being the greatest position of power from which to address global warming. He himself has said he wants to re-enter politics. Therefore, I don't find it selfish to hope that the man can fulfill all of his dreams in the position that he is most qualified for.

My support for Mr. Gore isn't dependent upon him running for president. I'll always support him. I think most people feel like me and aren't in this for their own so-called selfish reasons. Sure there are people that will always try to use the man's name for their own purposes. But unless you judge those who want our constitution and freedom restored and those who want to see the end of the corporations spewing their filth into our environment as selfish, I don't think you'll see many of them here at DU.

I can think of a lot of other places, however, that you could find sympathizers who don't want Mr. Gore to run for president.

44. This country DOES have a leader already who is facing it head on
Too bad you need the title to see that and to also see that it won't happen with just a title, it will not happen unless a groundswell of outrage and demand comes from the people as he has stated many times obviously to deaf ears. And I like it here just fine. Perhaps it is those who constantly push him like the RW does to discredit his work that need to see the parties they are more aligned with. Also, I have never stated that I would not like him to run for president again at some point if he WANTED IT. I simply believe and see as he does that this country on the whole is simply not at the point yet where this crisis will be paramount in the political sphere enough for him or anyone to be appreciated regarding it and it is too important now in comparison. Now if you are done twisting my words, I'm done explaining myself to you.

47. Given Al your 2 cents yet?
Have you given Al Gore your 2 cents yet?

If not:

"My Two Cents" Campaign to get Gore to run

The America for Gore Coalition (of which AlGore.org is a member) is dedicated to making Al Gore the Democratic candidate for President in 2008. At present, we're working to get Gore’s name on as many state primary ballots as possible, and we continue to work to show support for his candidacy. Time is growing short, and we all need to act NOW to demonstrate our support so that Gore understands how much the country wants him as its next president.

To convince Gore to step into the race, we've launched the "My Two Cents" campaign. We're asking all Gore supporters to mail him two pennies, together with a note indicating that real financial support will be provided if he accepts the challenge and runs for president. We believe that the mountain of pennies his office will receive will be a constant reminder to Mr. Gore that America needs and wants him to run.

Please send a letter telling the Vice President why you want him to be our next president, and enclose two pennies, explaining that you'll send more when he announces his candidacy. Mail letters to:

Office of the Honorable Al Gore
2100 West End Avenue, Suite 620
Nashville, TN 37203.

Please distribute this announcement to your e-mail list and post it on alll Gore-friendly blogs. You can refer people to the America for Gore website at http://www.americaforgore.org.

Thanks for doing your part!

77. He won't be steering anything...
...unless he's the one at the helm.

Sadly, the neocons have their paws all over everything. No real change will
even BEGIN unless someone grabs the wheel from those bastards and kicks them
to the curb.

If Al wants to incite real change, he will become the next pResident and
revolutionize everything. Anything short of that, and he'll be fighting the
neocons. You can't win that battle because they are psychopaths who care
only about power and greed. They don't listen. They don't sit at the table
and negotiate. They think it's amusing that the world is melting.

If Charles Manson steals your family car with your beloved family in it--you don't
try to change driving laws or hope that he'll come to his senses--or text him and
ask him to stop being so mean. You frickin grab a hold of that wheel, take your
place in the driver's seat and chart a paradigm-shifting course that blazes a
new and promising trail into the future.

Right??? Right! Run like there's no tomorrow...so this country HAS a tomorrow!!!!

I can picture you going across America telling us the time has come for us all to work together to fix our great nation. I can see you and Tipper encouraging from children to grandparents volunteers on the ground in a wide sweeping new program to reacclaim our cities and our standing in the world.

IMHO he is far and away the best man for the office in 2008. As he said in a fairly recent interview, "I'm still young". In 8 years he won't be able to say that any more. Now is his time. Now or never.

OTOH, I don't wish the burdens that will enshroud that office in 2009 on my worst enemies. It will be a horrendous job unraveling the complete mess the neocons made of absolutely everything, but someone's got to do it.

So why not the best guy?

90. Imagine that...
Gore writes a bestselling book.

Gore stars in a movie which wins two Oscars.

Gore sponsors a record-setting global rock concert for global warming.

Gore wins the Nobel Peace Prize.

Gore declares his candidacy on All Saints Day.

The rest of the field of hopefuls collapses at the feet of this colossus.

Gore doesn't win the general election in a landslide, he wins it in a tidal wave that washes across all 50 states.

3 down, 4 to go.

Because he would not only be slammed by the neo-cons, but by Hillary and the rest. As much as I would love for him to jump in now, I think it's be best for him to wait and see how Hillary and Obama are affected by the neo-cons with their mud slinging. Because honestly, I think if he were t ocome in right now he would not only be attacked by the neo-cons, but also by some on the "left" (Hillary) as to divert attacks from themselves.

117. Well, let me give you my reason...
I was surprised as you are to see this thread get so many recommendations. I've, as you put it, put "time and effort" into many posts, and have---with NanceGreggs help, on a couple of them---had them receive more than 150 recs.

But, you see, even 5 word OP's can be thought out, with quite a bit of time and effort. And, as you can see, this 5 word post hit a nerve with quite a few DUers, in a very short time.

It ought to tell you something about who, IMO, should be the nominee of our party...not for the good of the party...but, for the good of the country, and of the world.

Gore is trained, prepped, and primed...he is ready...more ready than anybody else in this day and time...in this hour...to be the leader of the free world. And, people know it.

So, I end this well thought out response, having put some "time and effort" into it with these simple words:

Run, Al Gore, Run. Please.

can't hold a candle to Al Gore's wisdom, integrity, experience, knowledge, or vision.

If Gore doesn't run, I may not vote.

While I like Edwards ideology, in reality, he does not possess Al Gore's knowledge, experience, or wisdom to be able to see it through -- he reminds me of Carter in the 70's -- good guy, good ideas, without a clue of how to get any of them implemented in reality.
