I wish that I could tell bald face lies as well as he does. I really, really wish that I had that ability. For example, in his new book, he bashes Bush for Bush's out of control spending and deficits. Now, what he leaves out is how he gave his approval to Bush's tax cuts in early 2001.
See, during the Clinton years, he convinced the Clinton admin to not undergo any new massive govt spending programs. Instead, he got Clinton to sign onto fiscal responsibility. In turn, Clinton got his party to also go along with a slight tax increase and cutting of govt spending in order to clean from the Reagan/Bush I years. Remember how Al Gore had to cast the deciding vote?
Well, the Democrats paid for their courage by losing their majority in 1994. Still, their sacrifice was not lost. The Clinton govt. turned deficits into surpluses, which could have been used to shore up SS. Recall Al Gore's lock box of 2000? However, the Bush admin. wanted huge tax cuts for his rich benefactors.
So, in 2001, with his tax cuts hanging in the balance, Greenspan could have stood up then for more fiscal responsibility and said "No" to Bush's tax cuts. Instead, he gave his approval knowing full well that all fiscal discipline in Washington would unravel after that.
Flash forward to today, he's now bemoaning Bush's lack of fiscal responsibility in his new book. Like I said, I wish I could lie as easily as he can.
