Lorain Ohio Police Use Taser Gun To Subdue Autistic Teen
Police Use Taser Gun To Subdue Autistic Teen

    POSTED: 5:20 pm EDT September 18, 2007

LORAIN, Ohio -- An autistic teen is recovering after police used a Taser stun gun to subdue him.

Police said Rashad Thompson, 14, was causing damage in the neighborhood of West 13th Street and Ronnell Avenue. Rashad is autistic and has behavorial problems, his mother, Tashanda Collins, said.

Police were called to the scene because Rashad had thrown rocks, breaking a window and damaging a vehicle. He was off his medication and out of control.

The police report said when police tried to calm Thompson, he threw rocks at them. Rashad is 6 feet tall and weighs about 200 pounds.

Lt. Tom Mize said officers were trying to get the situation under control.

"This young man is quite a big fella, 6 foot tall according to the report and 200 pounds according to the report," said Mize. "Unfortunately, the officer had to make a split-second decision in a tense situation."

Collins said officers should not have used the Taser.

She added that police should change procedure when dealing with special needs children.

Although Mize said the officer's conduct appeared to be correct, an investigation is under way.

1. Based On The Details, This One Seems Appropriate.
I know the knee jerk initial reaction is to think "How horrible! He was autistic!", but when faced with what they were faced with and what they knew at the time, they acted appropriately.

2. Sucks for him
Take your meds, don't freak out. Live a relatively tazer-free life.

3. Six foot, 200 lbs, throwing rocks, out of control, and with behavioral issues.
I've worked with autistic kids before (as an assistant speech interventionist senior year of undergrad). I can understand; sometimes they simply do not respond to you. Dealing with "challenging behavior" was certainly the hardest part of the job.

As for this situation? It's a split-second decision you have to make. You're facing an enormous, enraged person who sees you as an object. You have to restrain him somehow. I can't say he made the wrong decision.

4. This is NOT okay
When did it become okay to assault and batter anyone whether an autistic child or a college student or a protester or a homeless person or a pregnant woman just because they were behaving badly and/or didn't submit to the orders of a police officer? I am so sick and tired of the excuses law enforcement uses to justify the use of this weapon and that is exactly what a taser is - it is a weapon. And we've all read stories about people being killed by tasers.

I am tired of watching the ease at which law enforcement uses this thing. College kid won't shut up - taser his ass; kid won't leave the UCLA library - taser his ass; pregnant lady won't get out of her car - taser her ass; autistic child throws rocks - taser his ass.

Seems to me it's law enforcement that needs to be restrained - taser anyone?

5. Bravo! It is NOT OK to taser Americans into submission to LE.
We have lost our moral compass. The whole world sees America falling like the Roman Empire.

6. What do you offer as an alternate solution?
Neither pepper spray nor batons seem appropriate.

8. Sorry, but I'll have to disagree. This sounds like EXACTLY what Tasers should be used for.
A large individual attacking officers? Before Tasers,
he would have been shot.

And you aren't being completely accurate with your
"just because they were behaving badly and/or didn't
submit to the orders of a police officer" quote. That's
not what was happening in this case.

7. Thank God they didn't shoot him.
which they might have felt they had to do if the Tasers weren't available.
