I just got the paperwork in the mail today to serve on the local Draft Board
I applied to serve on the local Draft Board about 4 years ago. There was some correspondence, there were a few phone calls, and then it sort of died out. I didn't hear from them after the initial burst of interest. Last week there was a message on my answering machine from the "Area Office Manager" asking if I was still interested. Today all the final paperwork came in the mail. I'll sign it all and return it tomorrow. Looks like I'm going to get to be a member of the board. It remains to be seen if I'll actually have to serve in any meaningful way.

5. To provide the number of heads requested
But also to hear apeals from those who believe themselves to have been improperly classified.

15. Our job is not to provide any heads that are required
we are to decide criteria based on three types of deferments. Conscience observer, Student(theological), and hardship placed on the family if an individual were to serve.

2. And, naturally, you'll scan the paperwork to have a copy...?
Is it a binding job, or one you can leave if you decide not to participate in it later on?

Who did you initially contact?

Any tips?

11. This is just from memory ...
I think I was reading on this webpage that there might be a reinstatement of the draft. So I went to the webpage for the Selective Service System and found a link for how and where to apply if you might be interested in serving. I did whatever it said to do. They contacted me about 4 or 6 months later and I remember having a couple of discussions with the Air Force Major who coordinated the activity for some large geographical area. I really don't remember much more about it other than that I didn't hear from them again. I sort of forgot about it until the message last week, which I didn't bother to respond to. Today's mail package came as a suprise to me - but I'm still willing and interested in doing it.

6. that, should you get it, be one tough, sucky job
You'll have to swear to uphold whatever rules are in place - and the current rules are crock. While I imagine you hope to change the machine from inside that will be one tough row to hoe. My hat is off to you for your initiative, though. :applause:

16. There's "upholding"....
and "upholding".

Seems to me like Repubs uphold things the way they want to.... why not uphold in a way that will make things more interesting?

7. There was a long lag from the time that I applied and was appointed.
Unfortunately, a gentleman who had served on the local board for many years died and an opening was created.

My first training session was a long day with so much information, etc., that the heads of many were spinning from it all. Good luck!

8. Don't think I could do that.
In cases of unnecessary wars; I'd be looking at death notices to see if I were an accomplice to the soldiers death.

12. That is my dream job from another era.
I wish I had it in the late 60's especially about the time Young Republicans for Nixon came into prominence. It would have been wonderful.

14. honest question
will you be given information of the party affiliation of these draftees? I can't imagine that info being given. Well, yes I guess I can, I just wouldn't agree with it.

22. No, but a fast Facebook search ought to tell you.
Problem is, if we start doing it to them, they'll start doing it to us. This poor country's screwed up enough as it IS.

18. Thats not idle talk
They don't send those letters unless they think there's a strong likelihood the draft will be reinstated.

19. My thoughts exactly.
I'm seeing 2 and 4 year lags here - people apply but they don't do anything until there's going to be a need.

21. I know you are in it to make sure,
that the rethug kids get first pick, but really, I think the whole idea that the draft is likely to be reinstated- soon- is quite horrifying to say the least. I think this thread seems quite sedate, when we should all start screaming!!!!
