I think the good Rev. was very reticent to say much.

the social inter-personal relationship of NY police officers in the Louima "broomstick sodomy" case comes to mind. One of the officers charged said it wasn't about race because he had a black girlfriend. Mentally, I said OK, but I couldn't make a connection to his defense.

I deleted the above message I wrote because I misread what Reverend Edwards said. I mistakenly thought he agreed it was a prank, so I had the wrong impression. It's possible teenagers pranks can go to far, for instance, I know a black guy who makes jokes about his color and mine saying things like "you just don't like black people", "I'm scared of you becasue you're white", etc., and it's all fun and games, so I could see how teenagers joking around could get out of hand. In this incident it does not appear to be the case.

Personally, I have observed it, flinched, and waited for the players’ reaction. If they are OK, I’ll let it go, but I will find an opportunity to “educate” about sensitive issues.

For a long time I thought we had made progress toward fixing the problem of racism. But as the years went on I noticed that we can gravitate toward the same old thing. Look at behavior in prisons, for example. Everybody gets with an exclusive group based on their own race. The same thing often happens in schools.

It is a natural inclination to prefer the company of those with whom we have something in common. And group dynamics generate a need for members of your group to find some reason why you are somehow superior to others. Even if we were all of one race we would find something else to take the place of racism. Just look at Iraq, for example, where they are slaughtering each other due to their different religious denomination. And in Africa they kill each other because they belong to different tribes.

Sadly, I have concluded that racism was never a problem that could be permanently fixed. Bigotry of this nature is a potential condition of human interaction that will always require attention and maintenance to keep in check.

But it's Georgia, so....

Sheesh... It's sad that America is still divided in this way.

Racism and war - no time for that.
