So, technically under Louisiana law, the defendants might not have actually attempted murder. BFD. They beat the tar out of a student so badly the principal thought he was dead.
For the record, here's the Louisiana Law covering second degree murder:
Louisiana Second Degree Murder LA R.S. 14:30.1
A. Second degree murder is the killing of a human being:
(1) When the offender has a specific intent to kill or to inflict great bodily harm;
So, if the victim had died the DA the death WOULD have been second degree murder.
Furthermore, why weren't the 6 defendants charged with a hate crime, since it's very obvious that race was a motivating factor? Does hate only work in one way... whites against blacks?
