BUSH: "Mandela Is Dead Because Saddam Killed All The Mandelas"
Edited on Thu Sep-20-07 06:34 PM by kpete
BUSH:Part of the reason why there is not this instant democracy in Iraq is because people are still recovering from Saddam Hussein's brutal rule. I thought an interesting comment was made when somebody said to me, I heard somebody say, where's Mandela? Well, Mandela is dead, because Saddam Hussein killed all the Mandelas. He was a brutal tyrant that divided people up and split families, and people are recovering from this. So there's a psychological recovery that is taking place. And it's hard work for them. And I understand it's hard work for them. Having said that, I'm not going the give them a pass when it comes to the central government's reconciliation efforts.

2. He also said there's been no "instant" Democracy..
because the Iraqi people are "still getting over" the brutal rule of Saddam. Instant Democracy, just add death, destruction, and oppression...hey chimp, I wonder how long it will take the Iraqi people to "get over" the military occupation of the country by the U.S.? :banghead:

12. Wait, Bush is saying the Iraqis can't handle democracy? I thought that was racism!
Bush would be doing a lot better if none of us had memories. Unfortunately television hasn't quite progressed that far.

Yet.

I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't legit, but then again, I tend to prefer posting with doctored, wishful thinking pics!

9. When bush mentioned Mandela I immediately made some
comment to husband what the hell did Mandela have to do with anything, so, missed the other part. That is scary! Bush was on a tear today so I too was either laughing or cussing. He was especially disgusting today.

11. this is going to sound really bad, but
maybe it was on *'s 'to- do' list, and he didn't realize it wasn't done?

Nelson didn't have much good to say about *'s plans for Iraq-

we didn't want to have any Mandela's in Iraq, it would have interferred with business as usual.

He does realize Mandela is one person and the Mandela's are a family in Africa?

Or is my wife completely lost?

16. The historical allusion to Mandela is applied correctly here, folks.
Edited on Thu Sep-20-07 06:56 PM by Bucky
It's not a valid comparison in some respects, but Bush is, in his desperation, essentially reduced to almost acknowledging the truth. Well, part of it.

Of course calling some "a" Mandela is a pretty common and easily understood use of metaphorical language. Ho Chi Minh was called the Vietnamese Jefferson. Simon Bolivar was called the Napoleon of the West. Moscow was for centuries referred to as the Third Rome. Bush wasn't literally saying Mandela was killed by Saddam. It's an argument a Steve Doocy could destroy.

Saddam Hussein was more politically brutal than the South African Apartheid regime (altho less economically brutal). The Afrikaaners tossed their Mandela in jail for thirty years while his equivalents in Iraq were disposed of much more quickly. So in that, Bush is touching on "a" truth.

But his recognition of just how wrong they were about "cakewalks" and "welcoming us with open arms" for the 18 month drumbeat leading up to the war. The habits of democracy take decades to cultivate. Recognizing this fact in past was labled ipso facto racism by neocons even in the last few months. I guess they'll start calling Bush a racist next for finally realizing this, even if it took the evidence of 4000-5000 dead Americans and 80,000 to a million dead Iraqis to get him there.

Bush has always done a good job of making our case for us. I just never expected him to do it so directly.

22. it's ironic that Bush has done such a great job building up his "ignorant" image
.... that when he does use analogies that have even some elements correct, they fall flat!

29. I see that
It strikes me as ironic though, that the average right winger or even many DUers get all riled up when someone refers to * as a Hitler. They can't take it then. Here is shows even their Fuhrer knows what is means by an illusion, metaphor or comparison.

17. Geometric logic from our "Captain"
"Ah, but the strawberries! That's where I had them. They laughed at me and made jokes, but I proved beyond the shadow of a doubt, and with geometric logic, that a duplicate key to the wardroom icebox did exist! And I'd have produced that key if they hadn't pulled Caine out of action! I-I-I know now they were only trying to protect some fellow officer and!...."

28. This is a good example why Junior is the ultimate lackey.
The boys feed him these scripts and he parrots them out with such conviction.

Any half-wit with a mind of his own couldn't keep a straight face.

He's been taken over by a doppelganger all right.....and it's not us.

Next thing, they will accuse us of giving him the Evil Eye....

32. I think what he was trying to say
Is that there is nobody like Mandela in Iraq, and if there was, Saddam would have killed them.

He is probably right, but once again, his utter inability to speak the english language makes him look like a fool. Is it 2009 yet?
