10-Year Old Charged In Fatal House Fire
GREENVILLE, Ohio -- Police in Greenville said a 10-year-old boy has been charged with setting a house fire that killed four children and a woman.

Investigators said the child lived in the residence, and has made statements implicating his involvement in the incident.

The child was charged with one count of aggravated arson and five counts of murder by the Darke County Prosecutors Office and the Darke County Juvenile Court.

Greenville police said investigators were able to determine through their investigation and interviews from witnesses that the fire was intentionally set, but said the fatal outcome was not intentional.

This is a child who hasn't even fully developed his brain, to recognize that what he was doing might cause the catastrophe that it did. We have no idea how the fire was started, and you are advocating the death penalty and rape against this child. You would fit right in with the Abu Grhab torturers.

And I mean it sincerely. I'm not trying to call you a troll but I am honestly curious.

Why are you on this board? Advocating "frying" a 10 year old child is not a progressive, liberal or even a rational thing to say. I'd be surprized to see something like that from a Freeper much less a relatively long time donating member of this board. I know that you like to be a provocateur from your posts and of course your name but this is way beyond that.

The tragedy is almost unspeakable here. But executing a 10 year old? I don't know about you but when I was 10 I was in the 4th grade. Of course I knew right from wrong to a degree but at 10 thinking through the consequences of my actions was years away. Sometimes at 50 I still have trouble with that. :) Punishment for this child is living the life he will now live knowing what he did when he was 10.

I really don't understand your thinking here at all.

...what he did when he was 10." Amen!

I am against capital punishment AND corporal punishment under any circumstances, but still -- this is a 10-year-old child! The remorse this child will feel for the rest of his natural life is something horrendous. Where is your heart?

We seem to be in love with punishment itself.

25. It's an OCD compulsive disorder
My step-son's son is a firestarter. He is 5 and they are seeing therapists and all the rest. It's very scary stuff. We need more social services and support for struggling families instead of scaring the shit out of people with the idea that we're going to kill kids or lock them away the way in asylums.

28. In all honesty...
I didn't see anything in the article that even remotely suggested a diagnosis of OCD.

People seem obsessed these days with making Fristian diagnoses. It's like a compulsion or something.

29. Children are not born evil
They do not set fires for the purpose of killing people.

It doesn't take letters after your name to figure that out.

I need to find that poker again because I can see I'd rather stick it through my brain than try to figure out why you prefer to execute ten year olds.

14. You deduce this from a sketchy article?
Edited on Fri Sep-21-07 05:49 PM by MadHound
What, are you somehow clairvoyant, or is this just your spidey sense tingling? Shit happens, and around kids it happens twice on Sundays. Hell, I set both my apartment and myself on fire one time, and I was an adult. I was able to put everything out without much damage, but a kid can easily let things get out of control without meaning to. I'd wait for the full report before I'd consider putting the kid in the big house.

23. Did the kid just want to start a fire, or burn the house down
Big difference in that distinction. Sure, I was a bit of a pyro when I was a kid and deliberately set a few small fires that I could control. If they had gotten away from me, yeah, it would have shown up as a deliberate fire. Doesn't mean that I wanted to burn garage, or house in this case, down. Intention is a big factor in this case, and though it has become unfashionable these days, prosecuting a child like an adult is still wrong.

Again, we don't know much, and we should wait for the full report before we judge. That is, after all, what trials are for.

12. Was it from matches or a lighter? Did the boy understand that fire spreads?
I'd like to know more about how he actually started the fire. Did someone leave lighters or matches around? If so, wouldn't that make the adult responsible (as is the case when guns are left around)?

16. Kids love making fires. That's why we as parents need to keep them away from
matches and lighters. It's like keeping them away from guns. Fires and guns are cool, and kids have a limited understanding of how dangerous they are.

They will delay the trial till he's 13 or maybe 14 years old. That way, he will look older and be a lot less sympathetic at trial.
