Fake bomb at Logan/ nooses on pickup at Jena: compare and contrast
Edited on Sat Sep-22-07 01:30 PM by hedgehog
Left wingers are claiming the first was a prank and the second a hate crime. Right wingers are enraged over the first and calling the second a prank. I maintain that both incidents involve self centered fools who don't understand that some things in life are serious.

(fot those of you who say it wasn't meant to be a fake bomb, I might buy that if it was just the circuit board, but the play dough in her hand?)

15. Sometimes people can be damn stupid.
I can guess the thought process here: "Those" people ar making all that fuss over a couple of nooses. Are they trying to say that our town is bad? Let's just drive around with couple of nooses to see them get all upset over nothing. Then everyone will see how stupid all this fuss is.

Some people don't remember how bad things used to be, some people are in denial of how bad things used to be, a lot of people are in denial of how bad things can be today.

In this case, I can see the sheriff deciding that there was no threat involved, just some activity one step up from driving around hitting mail boxes with a baseball bat.

2. Compare also to Charles Alfred Dreyling, Jr.
See:

Repuke Pipebomb Enthusiast and Commerical Pilot gets 2 years probation, $1,000 fine, Community Svc

And by the way, Dreyling has people who google him and post in places like DU on his behalf:

13. I actually went to high school with him at PCN

6. That is a weird case. I find it hard to believe that he forgot he had
pieces of a pipe bomb in his luggage, but then I don't fly often, so every time I board a plane I've just packed my carryon. Other people fly all the time and just toss what they need in on top of what's already packed. It's possible. A lot of people get caught at security because they forget that the things they carry in their pockets - leatherman tools, jack knives, can be used as weapons. This kid may not have been thinking of the object as a terrorist weapon but as a boom stick. Two years probation and $1000 sounds about right.

7. It was something that under the circumstance
a reasonable person, might think was a bomb. She's a fucking idiot to have done it.

14. Only a moron would think that this was a bomb, fake or otherwise...

I would hope that a reasonable person would be more intelligent and less quick to go Code Brown in their pants.

It was a fucking moronic thing to do, and Security would have been sorely remiss had they not stopped her.

22. nope. I don't shit my pants over
this. Or over the eek it's the end of the world crap that so many do.

As I said it was a moronic fucking thing to do and only a moron wouldn't be able to figure out why. Just in case, let me explain it you in very simple terms and words of few syllables:

Security in Airports are on edge. Doesn't matter whether you think it's warrented or not. They are. And that's indisputable (sorry about the multi syllable word) This fact is widely known. Security in airports is tight. This is also widely known. She chose to show up at the airport wearing this gimmick with wires and a clearly visible battery. The reaction was predictable.

It was a moronic thing to do. Only a moron would wonder why.

8. It wasn't a real bomb.
I still want to know what the deal with the Play Dough was. She was asked by a counter agent to explain her shirt, but she walked away instead. That's when the counter agent notified security.

11. On the other hand, why didn't she explain her art project to the
clerk at the counter? (She went to a counter supposedly to check some flight information, then walked away when asked about her shirt.) Maybe she wasn't getting enough attention just walking around the airport?

This article says she did

16. Did it occur to you that maybe it's noisy in a major airport and she might not have heard?
And it isn't like she didn't try to explain when approached with guns, of course by then it was too late.

13. Ya know, I remember the first year of "24"
And the villain planted a remote bomb in a cell phone. Now, knowing how much stock the conservatives put in fictional TV series with Canadian-born heroes where torture works as an interrogation technique, why aren't folks packing T-Mobiles subject to the same treatment?

looked like the cell phone was embedded in or connected to a block of clay.

Edited on Sat Sep-22-07 02:45 PM by DS1
Obviously this girl is a little angel whose tiptoeing so angelically through a mean airport filled with fascist stormtroopers was 100% innocent and how could she know a homemade board of circuitry lights and a battery could be confused as a bomb by the evil warmongering police who just want to shoot us all dead. The very thought of this incident brings a tear to our eyes

25. So, let me get this straight
Reckless girl with toy bomb = a celebration of 400 years of lynch mobs, in a place where there have been many lynch mobs, the noose possibly hanging from a tree from which real bodies have hung in the past, at a time young black men are again being railroaded by injustice?

How shameless and clueless can you get?

26. Eh
The girl seemed more absent minded than stupid or malicious. She should have been investigated, but charging her is ridiculous.

And displaying a noose anywhere other than a historical display is widely known as symbol of lynching black people even to the younger generation. Hanging nooses on the "white" tree or affixing them to your pickup during a racially charged moment is hardly innocent.
