Less than half of military votes overseas counted
Election commission: 57,000 ballots were cast in ’06
By Leo Shane III, Stars and Stripes
Mideast edition, Tuesday, September 25, 2007

WASHINGTON — Overseas military voters had less than half of their votes counted in last year’s congressional elections, according to data released by the U.S. Election Assistance Commission on Monday.

“One thing is clear: At every level of government, we need to do a better job,” said Donetta Davidson, chair of the commission. “We must make sure all eligible voters are getting their opportunities.”

The figures, released at the commission’s annual conference on ways to improve and troubleshoot the absentee voting process, showed that only about 992,000 of the nearly 6 million eligible overseas citizens requested ballots for the 2006 general election.

That included about 119,000 military personnel stationed outside the United States. Of those, only about 57,000 — less than 48 percent — had their votes successfully cast or counted.

5. I frequently got my absentee ballot a day before, or a week after, the election.
This was back in the dark ages, before computers and so on, for much of the time, but it was a bummer at any time.

I was frequently disenfranchised, not just nationally, but also for state and local elections. Pissed me off, too.

6. EASILY OVER A MILLION REGISTERED.
Edited on Tue Sep-25-07 04:43 AM by Karenina
ca. 100,000 COUNTED. We KNEW this when the Pentagon shut down its website offering faxes as an alternative in 2004. So many lead stories about Europe being the 51st state due to the incredible outpouring of Americans registering.

....... Then the Supreme Court appointed Bushler.

(snip)

None are more conscious of the vital limits on judicial authority than are the members of this Court, and none stand more in admiration of the Constitution’s design to leave the selection of the President to the people, through their legislatures, and to the political sphere. When contending parties invoke the process of the courts, however, it becomes our unsought responsibility to resolve the federal and constitutional issues the judicial system has been forced to confront.

The judgment of the Supreme Court of Florida is reversed, and the case is remanded for further proceedings not inconsistent with this opinion.

Pursuant to this Court’s Rule 45.2, the Clerk is directed to issue the mandate in this case forthwith.

It is so ordered.

9. The Republicans counted on them during the 2000 election which is
why they made a big deal over extending the time to wait for them to come in, but in 2006, they wanted to undercount them, because the military men were no longer with them.

11. One thing.
In some places if one candidate leads the next highest vote getter by X number of votes and there are less than X absentee ballots left to count--they may never be counted. I don't know if that applies in this case.

19. they are supposed to eventually open and count them but on election night
Edited on Tue Sep-25-07 03:49 PM by SoCalDem
and the immediate period afterwards, if candidate A is ahead by 100K and there are 40K outstanding uncounted absentee, it's not gonna change anything. The problem is that other issues "downticket" may be close and those votes could change things

12. Did they ever report how many were uncounted in the 04 race? Or will the GOP claim Dems stole 06? nt

15. I don't think they can make that claim
Recent reports have been showing that military donations have largely trended Democratic and support has shifted from the GOP.

21. My dream is that this will be known as the lost decade
and both Gore and Kerry will be shown as the official winners of both elections and that those who rigged these elections
will be punished.

to encourage servicemembers to vote. That's why so few vote to begin with.
