Letter: Yet another ‘family values’ guy falls

Published: Sep 26, 2007

Another week goes by, and another elected official or religious leader known for touting ‘family values’ falls from grace.

The latest, John David R. Atchison, a U.S. Justice Department official and assistant U.S. attorney from the northern district of Florida, has been arrested on suspicion of traveling to Detroit to have sex with a 5-year-old girl.

Whether they have sex with minors, date prostitutes, have extramarital affairs or seek sex in public restrooms, these individuals all have one thing in common: They are all liars.

These people lie not only about their own sexual activities; they also lie about the conservative positions they supposedly support.

They lie to their families, their congregations, their constituencies, their families and friends.

After U.S. Sen. Larry Craig, R-Idaho, was arrested for allegedly soliciting sex in a public men’s room, he proclaimed emphatically “I am not gay!”

He was caught last week sometime. The last I read in the paper was that he attempted suicide.

Sex sting shocks Gulf Breeze community

The arrest of a federal prosecutor and popular community leader on child sex charges has rocked a close-knit town in the Florida Panhandle.

EXCERPT: ...SUICIDE ATTEMPT
On Tuesday morning, he tied a sheet to his neck and tried to hang himself, police say, but other inmates stopped him.
Since news of the arrest, Atchison's well-kept house on Shoreline Drive has been egged by high-schoolers. His wife, a popular teacher who recently won teacher-of-the-year honors, has taken a leave of absence. His youngest daughter, a senior at Gulf Breeze High, has not returned to school all week.

On Monday, U.S. Attorney Greg Miller sent out a terse statement, saying his colleagues were saddened by Atchison's arrest and were cooperating with the FBI and Macomb County investigators. The FBI has since seized Atchison's home and office computers.

''It's not unusual for there to be more issues other than the chat room,'' said Macomb County Sheriff Mark A. Hackel in Detroit. Among them, he said, is the possibility there may be child victims and involvement with child pornography.

That possibility has racked the Gulf Breeze town of 5,800 with worry and doubt.
''I've gone back mentally and reviewed everything we've done,'' said Buz Eddy, Gulf Breeze's city manager whose office is lined with team photos of his daughter's sports, including teams Atchison coached...

3. Power is Cover.
If one has recreational tastes that larger society tends to frown upon, it is helpful to hew closely to those who are in power and get some for yourself. By and large, the cops will be less predisposed to bring you to ground, until you do something so boneheaded and egregious that they can no longer ignore you. Also, because you are part of the "team", others who are more powerful than you will, on occasion, put the kibosh on the heat.

Also, if the malefactor is a repuke, it would seem that the default position is that repukes can do no wrong, so let them be.

Finally, when one has power, one can delude oneself into thinking that they can do anything they want, without repercussions.
