Here's why I'm so hesitant to sign online anti-war, pro Democrat,
pro gay, please help stop whale hunting, end global warming, blah blah petitions/surveys:

J U N K M A I L.

Spam is the thanks I get for sending in money to helping out and do the right thing.

I'm getting nothing but e-mails now from Moveon (after happily signing their petition about Betray Us). I'm certain I checked the applicable boxes indicating I don't want to be spammed, but yet I'm receiving unwanted daily correspondence. I already read the Moveon.org. I don't want or need anything else.

If my memory serves me correctly, there were at least four boxes I checked, indicating I do not want special offers, etc.

A lot of good that did.

I understand organizations want and nned to get their message and updates out.

But I think it hurts them in the long run because now I feel even less inclined to electronically sign anything -- no matter how noble the cause

It's really, really irritating to come home and have to weed through all of these unsolicited e-mails.

And before you tell me I should create a junk mail account for petitions/surveys, etc....I know I can but it's the principle, especially when I check the "I don't wish to receive newsletters."

Sorry, but I just don't feel like getting involved with good causes if I'm going to be hammered with spam.

And I know I'm not alone. You need to wake up Moveon, and the others. You're hurting your cause.

6. Didn't I say in my OP that it's the principle of the matter?
I'm just not going to electronically sign anything anymore if it requires an e-mail address.

That's a shame because there are some good causes that really need every signature possible.

2. That's what a spam filter is for on your computer and the
garbage can that you pass on the way from your mailbox. I put my junk mail in the recycler. You can't get away from it. I just took a cruise for a vacation and now I'm flooded with vacation junk. You really can't get away from it.

I do not get any spam from MoveOn.org , ever.

I do get updates when something's going on though but I chose to get those.

I have received one e-mail from MoveOn on 09/20 and a Thank You note on the 21st

and the last e-mail was on the 24th. That was two days ago. I don't call that spam.

And lately, you are sending an actual letter, when you sign the letters/petitions.

They hand deliver them. Each signer has their own copy printed out and hand delivered.

11. That is completely different from an Organizations letters and petitions.
That article at snopes is referring to independent e-mail petitions.

There have been organizations that had people sending letters and faxes to the house and senate
and they were swamped with responses that it shut down the machines at the state offices.

I believe snopes is referring to The Petition Site which has some very good and also some very lame petitions.

I don't sign any e-mails from an independent e-mailer.

Organizations are a different story.

organizations that do this because it irritates me that I receive e-mail even though I click the "don't wish to receive newsletter." etc box.

any e-mail that you don't want, like MoveOn and unsubscribe from it!

MoveOn doesn't send spam!!!

I totally got your point but you have no way of knowing where your spam is coming from!

When is the last time that you ran Spybot S & D? or Spyblaster?

Or updated and did an anti-virus scan? I don't have the issue's you're having, although

I used to before I installed all of the above and update them regularly!

Sounds to me like you might have a worm!

I also add e-mail addy's to my spam blocker file, so that any mail from that email domain is blocked!

And you can block e-mails if you are using Outlook Express on your desktop.

20. "Do Macs get viruses?" --- A: "It is possible for an Apple Macintosh to get a virus"
http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000737.htm

Question:

Do Macs get viruses?

Answer:

It is possible for an Apple Macintosh to get a virus, so the short answer to the question is "Yes". However, the likelihood of an Apple Macintosh user getting a virus when compared to a Microsoft Windows user is very little to none. In fact, many of the Apple Macintosh users don't even run an anti-virus protection program.

Below are some of the reasons why Apple Macintosh computers do not have as many viruses as Microsoft Windows.

A listing of virus protection programs as well as virus protection programs that support the Apple Macintosh computer can be found on document CH000514.

Note: If you're running a virtual PC on your Apple Macintosh, because it's emulating Microsoft Windows, it can become infected with Windows viruses and you should be running an anti-virus protection program on it. In addition an Apple Macintosh can serve as a virus carrier, meaning that a virus could be stored on an Apple Computer yet not infect it. But if that computer were to connect to a network or a user was to forward an infected e-mail to a Windows computer that could become infected.

34. Some people would rather complain than solve a problem
One of my pet peeves is people complaining about emails.

I get nearly 100 emails a day. The ones I don't want to read get deleted. Takes oh maybe one minute a day. If someone emails me and I REALLY don't want to receive emails from them, I spam them. That takes oh maybe 5 seconds.

Then I move along and worry about REAL problems.

Works well for me.

17. I don;t know what your e-mail client server is
Outlook, aol, comcast.net yahoo.com etc., but I use incredimail (it's free) and it has an option to bounce unwanted e-mails back to where they came from so it looks to the sender like an invalid address. It also has an option to block mail from sender. I find it very handy for limiting the amount of Junk mail I get.

38. Incredimail would enable you
to collect your yahoo, comcast, gmail etc., under one program. It's a lot like outlook express if you're familiar with that. When you open the program, it goes out and collects the mail from all of your mail accounts enabling you view/handle them all together. The only exception is AOhL. I do like the bounce back and block sender features. It also has animated smilies and different animated stationery's that are pretty cool if you're into dressing up your e-mails. I found it a couple of years ago and for it being a free program, I like it.

36. - - - ----------ATTENTION-------- - - -
I didn't intend Moveon to become the focus of my complaint about non profits/for profits taking advantage of donors' e-mail addresses by sending out unsolicited announcement on a more than just occasional basis.

I used Moveon (****An organization I very much support****) as an example, because I've been receiving the most amount of spam from them recently.

But as I mentioned in another post, I had the same problem with the Red Cross after I donated for Katrina and the tsunami.

I'm not trying to make a federal case out of this, and I understand I can delete all of the stuff I don't want to read.

But IT'S THE PRINCIPLE of taking advantage of people's personal information for an activity I didn't agree to.

Some sites won't allow you to submit something, unless you provide an email address.

And then they promptly put you on their email list.

Sorry to everyone who just can't stand the fact that this bothers me.

But it does because it's the principle of the matter.

No need to get nasty as one person did and post a "crazy" icon in response. Jesus.

48. Same here.
It took four e-mails from me (sent over the course of two months) for MoveOn to process my "unsubscribe" requests a few years ago.

After I signed a few petitions and rallied behind a couple of causes, I was INUNDATED DAILY with e-mail "updates," that always ended with a request for money.

I support MoveOn. But I did not welcome constant uninvited requests for additional $ assistance - and I was particularly broke at the time. Every request they made just reminded me not only of how I felt not only politically marginalized, but also economically marginalized - even by "my own people."
