After everything that happened today, can anyone tell me why
the lead story on every single SF 11:00 evening news program is Barry Bonds leaving the Giants?!?

1. I'm in a cynical mood; I can help.
Assuming there are a hundred sixty million adults in the US, and, being generous, there may be twenty million of us nuts who are desperately concerned abound how badly the country and consequently the world are going off the tracks, that's a hundred forty million who only want to be entertained and don't want to be bothered with serious crap, right now.

If I were the warm stream media and I wanted to sell stuff, I'll bet I would prefer to pander to the 140 million than only to 20. My numbers may be a little off, but not by orders of magnitude.

2. competition
Maybe since there are about eleventy different cable news shows carrying national and international news on a 24 hour cycle (when they can squeeze it in between OJ and Britney), the local SF stations figured their target demo means catering to the niche market: folks in SF looking for local news at 11pm?
