Conn. dealing with algal poison

Health officials said a possible health hazard is growing in a Naugatuck Valley lake.Officials said the toxic algae cyano-bacteria, was discovered in Hop Brook Lake in Middlebury. Since the discovery of the blue-green algae, the lake has been closed until further notice. The Army Corps of Engineers, which manages the lake and the park surrounding it, took samples Monday for analysis. Officials said anyone who swims in the lake is at risk of gastro-intestinal complications, skin rashes, skin infections and having neuron-toxins affect their liver. The algae thrives naturally in hot, dry conditions and will go away naturally with a lot of rain and cooler temperatures. "It's scary … nobody wants to go in the water and come up with any type of diseases," said Myrna Pinkney, of Naugatuck. Officials said they noticed there was a problem with the lake when its fish began dying. They said that they will continue testing the water until it is clear.)
