I need help from DUers that have had car wrecks about auto insurance.
It's not me. It's my daughter.
She had 2 fender-benders - real minor stuff. We tried to get the last one settled outside of the insurance company - it happened in the school parking lot. You would think another parent of a teenager would understand. But no - the asshat reported it to insurance. Now her rates went up to 700/month! I called today and got them to lower it to 500/month - at the price of a much higher deductible.

Anybody out there who has had a similar experience?

I need to find cheaper insurance for her - and fast!

Thanks ahead of time.

1. I had that problem
Progressive gave me great rates. I've never had to make a claim since I've had them (5 years), but I have no reason to believe they'd be anything but good.

2. While the treatment of all of us, by Insurance companies is terrible...
The young are particularly hard hit. From what I have heard from a friend who worked at a big insurance company, they really don't want many young people driving, as few as possible. The high rates are one way they achieve that.

3. If your state allows an 'occasional driver' designation, that could save you some money...
If she has more than one car available to her, pay attention to the vehicle assigned to her by the insurance company.

The insurance companies have a list of the safest and cheapest to fix cars which will affect your daughter's rate.

Find out how long she has to drive to no longer be designated as an 'inexperienced driver.'

If she is a 'good student' some insurance companies give you a small break.

Just a couple of ideas.

4. That's ridiculous!
I bought my first new car a few years ago and gave my daughter the old car. Within a week she dented my new car with the old car backing out of the driveway. Then she wrecked my new car by her high school. She was doing a U-Turn to park at the curb by the school and another student tried to pass her in a Mercedes Benz-on a one-lane road. The family had 3 cars, but they got a full rental (hey, they can) and my insurance almost doubled. Even with that and a few tickets (daughter's), full coverage didn't exceed $170 a month. You can definitely find cheaper insurance!

Brent Christiansen, though my payment went to United Insurance Underwriter's, I believe. Now I use Progressive since I've moved to Washington. They are pretty reasonable, but not as cheap as my prior insurance, who I was with for five years. I wish you luck. It's hell having teens on insurance, and for good reason. The odds are pretty high that they'll get in a fender bender within their first year of driving. I do not know of anyone whose teen hasn't wrecked the family car at least once, if they're lucky, within months of getting their driver's license.

On edit: can't write.

7. Unfortunately teenagers are high risk. Very high risk when driving,
and she has had 2 accidents already? If it were me, I would drop her insurance and let her ride the bus til she grows up a little. Not trying to sound mean, but she obviously isnt driving very well if she has had 2 claims as a teenager! I have had 2 claims as a 37er! And as a fellow parent, I think kids who think driving is a right and not a priveledge are a danger to everyone else.

8. They were nothing serious. The second one was a sudden stop in the school parking lot.
She is a straight A student, has a job after school.
And in Az our public transportation is practically non-existant.

I don't need you lecturing me how to raise my kid - geez.

13. You are arguing with a person who thinks 2 accidents as a teenager is nothing serious.

15. If she is licenced in many states she must be insured
so they likely have no choice now. I would definately buy her a beater and get her off expensive cars though.

9. What state are you in? $500 a month is steep but -
- it truly depends on where you live due to the difference in state laws and premiums. I'd consider getting her an older car that only needed liability coverage. A good student discount would help as would a defensive driver course credit. If all else fails, have her ride the bus to save both your insurance premiums and the environment. That's what I make my teens do!

14. Unless she broke her dialing finger in the accident, tell her to track down a better rate herself.
The kid's going to have to learn responsibility sometime, that would be a start.
