http://hisz.rsoe.hu/alertmap/woalert_read.php?cid=13546&cat=dis&lang=engAuthorities will be posting the Klamath River in Northern California next week to warn of high concentrations of toxic blue-green algae. Craig Tucker, who works for the Karuk Tribe, says people living along the river started noticing it turning bright green last week and tests confirmed the toxic blue-green algae. David Leland of the North Coast Regional Water Quality Control Board says it is the same toxic algae that has been forming in the Copco and Iron Gate reservoirs upstream. Besides posing a health hazard to people and animals, the spread of the algae could boost pressure on PacifiCorp to agree to remove a series of 4 hydroelectric dams on the Klamath. Indian tribes, salmon fishermen and conservation groups have sued the regional water board and PacifiCorp to control the algae, and the Portland-based utility needs to show that it's dams don't harm water quality to qualify for a new operating license for the dams.)
