Satellites confirm reports of Myanmar violence
Satellites confirm reports of Myanmar violence
Fri Sep 28, 2007 1:19pm EDT

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Satellite images confirm reports of burned villages, forced relocations and other human-rights abuses in Myanmar, scientists said on Friday.

The American Association for the Advancement of Science said the high-resolution photographs taken by commercial satellites document a growing military presence at 25 sites across eastern Myanmar, matching eyewitness reports.

"We found evidence of 18 villages that essentially disappeared," AAAS researcher Lars Bromley said in an interview.

1. It's worse than we knew: "...18 villages [have] essentially disappeared..."
Could there be an international boycott of Myanmar like the South Africa boycott?

I doubt that China woul particiapte. China holds same position concerning putting down protests. How much does Myanmar trade with China?

I read yesterday that the GWB campaign sold clothing made in Myanmar. :(

2. I'm sure the bush administration will get right on it, as soon as they determine if they have oil...

3. I'm sure that Bush doesn't give a fuck. He probably doesn't even know where Myanmar is.
I don't know if they have oil but they mine a lot of important minerals as well as precious stones. The miltary junta is holding on to power so they can profit from the natural resources.

4. They can achieve this kind of detail from a satellite???
I mean, how do they confirm "other human-rights abuses"? And, if satellites can produce this type of detail why can't they keep an eye on Tora Bora? They should be able to track any type of movement whatsoever. I'm just asking....

5. Supposedly, some satellites have optics
capable of picking up the shape of a Muslim man's beard. At any rate, checking with Google Earth should show you what sort of detail a lot of them can pick up. Cars are no problem, so houses wouldn't be a problem.

If weather conditions were ideal, picking up on villages that have been destroyed would present no problem.

As for Tora Bora, we'd have to know what the weather conditions were and whether there was a satellite in position at the appropriate time to figure that one out.

10. And I guess those super-duper satellites should have been able to see WMDs in Iraq...
or the LACK thereof? I'm just asking...

12. That's where all those photos of warehouses full of goods
with semis parked outside came from. Remember, Powell & Co. told people they were obvious munitions factories and people bought it.

Never mind those places could have been photographed outside any major US city. They were in Iraq, were photographed by satellite, and were therefor eeeeeevullll, Powell told us so!

7. I just saw an interview a few minutes ago
with a guy from one of the sat copmpanies that works with the human rights groups.

He was showing obvious black burned areas that were house shaped in several of the villages that had been reportedly been attacked. They can get quite a lot of information..

As for Tora Bora, I'm betting they see a lot. And don't care.
